It was 40 years ago this week that First Down Dash went through the ring at B.F. Phillips Jr.'s annual Phillips Ranch Sale near Frisco, Texas. Bred by Phillips and A.F. Stanley Jr., the Oklahoma-bred yearling c**t by Dash For Cash was purchased for $97,000 by Mrs. Mildred Vessels of Vessels Stallion Farm in California. Of course that turned out to be a tremendous bargain, as First Down Dash went on to win 13 of 15 starts with earnings of $857,256 and then as a stallion surpassed many of the records set by Dash For Cash.
