Hard to imagine, but there was a time when you could literally drive and park right on Front Beach — and even hop an electric trolley from Mount Pleasant straight to the shoreline. What a vibe. 😍

From trolley stops and dance halls to today’s metered parking, beach lots, and the CARTA shuttle, getting to the sand has always evolved — but one thing stays the same: Front Beach has always been the heart of IOP.

Dive into this nostalgic look at how beach days used to roll — and why today’s trolley-style CARTA buses might just be bringing a little of that old-school charm back to life.

🌴 Sun, sand, stories, and seaside history — it’s all waiting for you in our latest feature.

Then vs. Now: Remember the horned toads of Isle of Palms?

Before ghost crabs stole the spotlight, these quirky little lizards once roamed IOP’s beaches and sandy roads in the ’50s and ’60s — fascinating kids, terrifying siblings, and becoming a true part of island folklore. With their spiky backs, camouflaged coloring, and wild defense tricks (yes, even eye-bleeding! 😳), horned toads were unforgettable.

They may have disappeared for decades after Hurricane Hugo, but in recent years, a few have been spotted again — leaving locals wondering if Mother Nature is giving our grandkids a chance to meet the legends that once ruled the island.

Do you remember them… or were you secretly scared too? 👀

Thirty years. A lifetime of service. One unforgettable legacy. 🚒✨

This December, Isle of Palms Fire & Rescue is honoring Battalion Chief Roger Eagle as he retires after three decades of dedicated service to our island community. Known for his integrity, mentorship, leadership and unwavering commitment to public safety, Chief Eagle has helped shape IOPFR into the strong, trusted department it is today.

To carry his legacy forward, IOPFR is establishing the annual Roger Eagle Award, recognizing firefighters who exemplify pride, professionalism and true dedication to the community — the very values Chief Eagle lived by.

Congratulations, Chief Eagle — your impact will continue to protect and inspire Isle of Palms for generations to come. 🤍

We hope y’all had a beautiful holiday week and enjoy this weekend around the island! 🙌🏼
