StormTeam2 Tropical Update as of 5pm Sunday (8-20)

2 new named storms today….Emily and Franklin. As you can see by the projected tracks, neither is a concern for the U.S.

Tropical Depression 6 in the Caribbean will be short lived, and the area in the far eastern Atlantic Ocean will also be watched, but should also stay well out to sea.

The Gulf of Mexico disturbance will most likely be a big rainmaker for Texas and Mexico.

Will continue to watch the tropics and keep you updated!

8am Sunday (8-20) Tropical UPDATE…

It’s still busy in the tropics, even a Tropical Depression in play. TD 6 will be short lived, and will dissipate on Monday.

The area moving into the Gulf is expected to potentially develop into a tropical depression in the next couple of days and could be threat to Texas down the road.

The red area in the Caribbean also needs to be monitored for development, with a forecast turn to the north expected over time.

The other 2 areas in the far eastern Atlantic Ocean also could develop, but at this time, indications are these will stay out to sea.

Overall, the map looks messy, but nothing we should be too concerned about at this time for us. StormTeam2 will keep watch, and keep those updates coming!

Good Sunday Morning!

Overall, turned out to be a little wetter on Saturday than expected, but as we mentioned on WCBD News 2 on Friday, the onshore wind can do that to a forecast! My rain gauge was just under 1/2”.

Today, we have already started out with a few showers moving in from the ocean, and additional showers and thunderstorms are offshore. As you can see in our hour by hour rainfall forecast (green bar=rain, red bar=thunderstorms), the highest threat will be early afternoon.

Temps did reach the low 90’s on Saturday, and we should be about the same today. Heat index close to 100 this afternoon.

More 90’s for next week, with the highest on Tuesday, with possible upper 90’s!

Have a great Sunday!

For many of our Lowcountry students and teachers, it’s the last day of Summer vacation, as they head back to school tomorrow!

Here’s to a fantastic school year!!?

08/17/2023

After a “frog strangler” for many of us last night (2.42” in Downtown Charleston set a daily record), it appears drier today.

Our StormTeam2 Weather Planner for 8-17 shows a stalled front nearby, with drier air trying to push in. We have seen a few isolated showers along the coast this morning, but overall, our computer models have trended drier in the latest runs. The rain threat this afternoon is less than 20%. We expect nothing like Wednesday, where some areas in Colleton County saw upwards of 7” of rain!

High temps should reach 90 degrees for the 14th time this month. Heat Index values should stay just under 100.

Drier again for Friday and Saturday, before another front arrives on Sunday with a higher threat of rain.

Temps should stay in the low to mid 90’s this weekend.

Have a great day!

From Charleston County Parks

Due to a continued lifeguard staffing shortage, Charleston County Parks is unfortunately closing Splash Zone Waterpark at James Island County Park for the remainder of the season. Closing Splash Zone will allow us to shift remaining lifeguards to our largest waterpark, Whirlin’ Waters Adventure Waterpark, where we can serve the greatest number of people while adhering to the highest safety standards.

Lifeguard shortages continue to be a national issue, so we will begin lifeguard recruitment for next season at the end of December. If you or someone you know is interested in guarding next season, please have them visit www.ccprc.com/jobs and sign up to be notified when openings are posted later this year.

Lots of numbers in our StormTeam2 Monday (8-14) Weather Planner, but it’s a nice one stop shop to view the day today and the days ahead!

Heat Advisory kicks in at 11am as we anticipate another day of highs well into the 90’s, and the heat index 110 or higher in some spots!

The rain threat is low, but just like Sunday, we can’t rule out a few slow moving sea breeze showers and thunderstorms to develop this afternoon.

Tuesday looks hot and humid, with a higher threat of showers and thunderstorms.

The rain threat remains elevated through Thursday, with cooler temps because of more clouds and rain.
