Mt Rainier area cooling centers

It's supposed to stay real ugly hot the rest of the week, with possibly a 110 heat index on Friday. I link to Brent Bolin's list of the local Mount Rainier cooling centers, and the County Exec's list, including the Rollingcrest-Chillum Community Center (6120 Sargent Road, Chillum, 301-853-2005) which is open until 9:00 PM.

Borders is liquidating; closing its remaining 399 stores

This doesn't have much to do with Mount Rainier, of course, but it's still sad. The most important thing is that 11,000 or so people will be thrown out of work, perhaps as soon as this Friday. But on a personal basis, Borders' closing marks the passing of another chapter in my life. It was a vivid part of raising our children.

The Sunscreen Smokescreen

The Information Is Beautiful site has published a great infographic synthesizing everything you need to know about UVA and UVB sun hazards and sunscreen protection. More on this can be read on the Mount Rainier News blog: http://bit.ly/n9XrlR

This simple question took me on a massive journey through the data, information myths and misinformation that surround our perception of sunscreen. I’m calling it the Sunscreen Smokescreen.

Hyattsville Keeps it Cool on the 4th of July

Nice photo feature on the July 4th activities at the PG Pool. Of course, since it's from the Hyattsville Patch the headline implies everyone came from there, but the captions reveal that PG Pool draws from all over the area.

PG Pool members celebrate the holiday with an annual bike parade.

Johnson financial literacy bill withdrawn, but by whom?

I think Spivack is missing the lede here. Leslie Johnson was sponsoring a bill on financial literacy? There's a great joke in there somewhere. The best I can come up with, though, is something about a brassiere being a cash management instrument.

A bill that council member Leslie Johnson sponsored to promote financial literacy was withdrawn Wednesday.

How Leslie Johnson will be replaced. The Gazette reports that a special primary must be held between 45 and 60 days after she quits office, and a general election between 60 and 90 days afterwards.

There is no money for these elections in the county’s fiscal 2012 budget. Thomas Himler, director of the county’s Office of Management and Budget, estimates they'll cost between $200,000 to $300,000.

Urban Eats Arts and Music Cafe

Keep in mind their somewhat unusual hours and avoid disappointment. Urban Eats is closed Monday and Tuesday. They're open Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 4:00PM to 10:00PM, but with 'kitchen service' only available from 4:30 to 9:30.

On Saturday and Sunday they're open 10:00AM to 4:00PM, but again the kitchen opens a half hour after and closes a half hour before the Cafe does.

Leslie Johnson to resign council seat effective July 31

'Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker says Johnson resignation should be as "quickly as possible," and should not wait for July 31.' 'Council unanimously says Leslie Johnson should resign immediately. Takes away car, staff and cell phone. Staff to report to top council aide' - Tweets from WaPo reporter Miranda Spivack, 7/5 12:00PM

Johnson made international news when she hid cash bribes in her bra.

One door closes, another opens: Urban Eats, a new restaurant and coffee shop in Mount Rainier, has just opened in the space (3311 Rhode Island Ave.) formerly occupied by Artmosphere. Early reports say the food is 'delicious' and service friendly.

Rhode Island Reds closes

If you planned to eat at Rhode Island Reds, you've blown it: the sandwich shop closed June 30. Owner Christopher Brophy described the business as “modestly profitable," which I read to mean it barely made money. If you want places like Reds to be around, folks, you've got to support them.

Restaurant offered pizza, sandwiches, and offbeat sense of humor.
