Sunset at Kings Bluff! Kings Park Bluff, located in Smithtown, NY, is a scenic spot on Long Island’s North Shore where the Nissequogue River meets the Long Island Sound. Historically part of land acquired by Richard Smythe in 1665, it was originally inhabited by the Nesaquake Indians. The bluff later became a key recreational area, offering boating, fishing, and hiking, with its modern identity as a town-resident-only beach solidified by the 20th century. Its natural beauty and trails, part of the Long Island Greenbelt, have made it a cherished local landmark.[](https://www.smithtownny.gov/579/About-Smithtown)[](http://amikewholikestohike.blogspot.com/p/normal-0-false-false-false-en-us-x-none_96.html)[](https://www.smithtownmatters.com/smithtown-history/2014/1/13/town-historian-bradley-harris-on-smithtowns-founder-richard.html)

Exclusive: The only restored and fully functional and fully maintained building in Kings Park Psychiatric Complex and it looks like a Hollywood set for a WW2 or 1930s movie

The Veterans Memorial Hospital Unit (VMHU) at Kings Park Psychiatric Center, located in Kings Park, New York, was established in 1927 as the first state-operated mental health facility dedicated solely to U.S. veterans. Opened in response to inadequate mental health care for veterans after World War I, construction began on July 4, 1923, following a $1.5 million appropriation recommended by Governor Alfred E. Smith. Designed by state architect Sullivan W. Jones, the VMHU included 21 buildings, with a 900-bed capacity, featuring a state-of-the-art medical/surgical facility, patient wards, administrative offices, and housing for staff. The facility, which opened on September 24, 1927, provided treatment, occupational therapy, and recreational opportunities. By 1954, it served 1,480 veterans. The VMHU operated until the broader Kings Park Psychiatric Center closed in 1996, after which the site became part of Nissequogue River State Park. Many buildings, including VMHU structures, now stand abandoned, facing deterioration and vandalism.[](https://www.untappedcities.com/abandoned-veterans-memorial-kings-park-psychiatric/)[](https://untappedcities.com/2024/04/15/abandoned-veterans-memorial-kings-park-psychiatric/)[](https://www.untappedcities.com/abandoned-kings-park-psychiatric-center-long-island/)

We warned you in 2018 that if the Brookhaven Republicans were allowed to extend their terms of office on the sneak, they’d eventually push for it at the county level.

Fast forward to 2025, Ed Romaine is the County Exec, and that’s exactly what they’re doing.

Smith Point Beach, located on Fire Island, New York, is a popular spot for surfers and beachgoers, known for its exposure to Atlantic Ocean swells. While specific historical data on "f waves" (likely referring to wave conditions or a specific type of wave) at Smith Point is limited, the beach's wave history can be understood through its coastal dynamics and surfing culture.- Geographical Context: Smith Point Beach, part of Smith Point County Park, faces the Atlantic, receiving a mix of groundswells and windswells, primarily from the southeast. Its position on a barrier island makes it susceptible to dynamic wave conditions influenced by storms, tides, and coastal morphology. The beach's waves are shaped by its sandy seabed and proximity to inlets like Moriches Inlet, which can amplify currents and affect wave patterns.- Wave Characteristics: Waves at Smith Point typically range from 1-2 feet on calm days to larger swells during storms or hurricanes, with heights occasionally exceeding 3-4 feet. The beach break offers both left and right-hand waves, with the best conditions often during winter months (e.g., December) when offshore northwest winds align with southeast swells. Historical data suggests clean, surfable waves occur about 30% of the time in winter.
