Jorge, a 60-year-old loggerhead sea turtle, has made an extraordinary journey back to the open ocean after spending over four decades in human care. He was first rescued in 1984 after becoming entangled in fishermen’s nets off the coast of Argentina. Soon after, he was moved to an aquarium in Mendoza, far from the sea, where he became a beloved attraction and lived for decades in a small tank.

Efforts to restore his freedom began in 2021, when researchers, legal experts, and more than 60,000 supporters advocated for his release. Marine biologists then implemented a careful three-year rehabilitation program to help him regain his natural skills. Jorge was gradually reintroduced to saltwater, live prey, moving currents, and challenges that required him to hunt and compete for food.

In 2025, Jorge was finally released into the Atlantic with a satellite tracker. Within weeks, he had already swum over 1,700 miles north toward Brazil. He is now navigating the waters off Santa Catarina, proving that even after decades in captivity, wild animals can reclaim their instincts and thrive.
