Kids are exhausting, right? I mean, from the day they are born, we are chasing, catering, chauffering, worrying. We're entertaining, feeding, getting them dressed. And don't even get me started on the outfit changes.

Good parenting lesson.

Good parenting lesson.

She had just had her finger pricked at the doctor's and as a reward (this is genius) her pediatrian office gives them a token which they can use in a vending machine filled with fun little toys.

She knew which one she wanted- the little blue octopus. She put in her token and out came- an orange octopus. The dismay was real. She melted into a ball of tears "but I wanted the bluuuue one, not the oraaaaaange one!"

A kind nurse motioned to me and offered to give her another token to try again and I almost took her up on it since Tessa was turning into a scene. But I said no thanks, and here's why.

Because our kids need to learn what to do with their disappointment. We can't keep them from it. Our world and the people around us are FILLED with it. Everything in us as parents wants to protect our children from hurt and disappointment- but if we're constantly rescuing them from it then we're really setting them up for failure once they hit the real world.

Let them feel disappointment; but be there for them in the midst of it, tell them we're sorry, help them process why they feel that way and offer suggestions for alternatives. It would have been easier for me (and everyone else in that office lol) to just keep giving her coins until she got the blue octopus, but it would have done the opposite for Tessa in the long run.

She walked out crying with that orange octopus and not 2 hours later was playing happily with it, and had named it the cutest name ever- squiggles 🐙#PrepThemForTheWorld

Someone asked me how to build strong girls?

I definitely have 2 strong ones, so I’ll give it a shot.
1. Don’t over parent them.

Don’t nag. Don’t do their work for them. Don’t bail them out of every trouble. Don’t hold them back from experiences or trials that will shape them.
2. But do over protect them from the world.
Wait and wait and wait some more before giving them social media. When they complain- show them the research. And say tough!

Be the parent!

Require the boys that want to so much as text them meet with you first. You can imagine the stories we have to tell about this one. It’s rare but it scares off the ones that should be scared off.
TV and movies- why train them to be exactly like the world? We are sticklers about this. And the older ones look back and can already thank us. Lots of Shark Tank and Animal Planet at our house.
3. Help them see their gifts and use them.
You’ll see their strengths before them. Encourage the tar out of them!! The whole world has forgotten how to do that. They face more criticism than you or I can imagine. Overdo it with praise about the real things you see God doing in their lives. Give them a vision for how God is and could work in their future too.
4. Fight the lies. They are believing them- the lies are everywhere. Assume they are thinking constantly about how they don’t measure up, how they need to be prettier or thinner, how they can’t do the thing they want to do, how they are a disappointment.

FIGHT FOR THEM! And they don’t need a better self-esteem. They need to know they are loved and set apart by Jesus.
TAG your friends with girls!
