Morning reading: book 1, page 184/1077 - The Intertextual Tanakh. I just read about the Ark of the Covenant in Exodus 25 and there is a commentary note that a similar processional ark was found in the tomb of Tutankhamen. I love how the notes in this Bible are connecting much of my reading for the Great Books to the scripture. There are a ton of connections to Mesopotamia and Egypt and especially to early Mesopotamian literature.

Morning reading: book 1 for the year - The Intertextual Tanakh. I’m currently in the middle of the book of Exodus. I love how this version ties the exodus story to other areas of the Hebrew Bible. Very interesting.

Here’s the layout of the Bible I’m reading. English on the right, Hebrew on the left, commentary on both outer sides (all in English). Genesis starts at the back of the book, so I’m reading in the opposite direction from every other book I’ve read in my life. I’m up to Genesis 45 in my attempt to read through the entire Bible + Apocrypha by the end of February. This is how I begin each year, reading through a different version/translation of the Bible.

Sunday morning reading: The Intertextual Tanakh, book 1 for the year, page 72/1077. I’m currently in Genesis 31 and the commentary has been very helpful. This volume contains the Torah and Early Prophets and has the Hebrew on the right and English on the left. It’s fun to see the commentary reference Robert Alter whose translation/commentary I read in 2023.

Here are the books I read in 2025.

Thus Beginneth:
Book 1 for 2026: The Torah and Early Prophets

I start each year reading through a different version of the Bible during January & February. I start in Genesis and read until the end of Revelation. This year, I’ll be including the Apocrypha. For the Torah (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus , Numbers, Deuteronomy) and Early Prophets (Joshua, Judges, Samuel, Kings), I’ll be using this Intertextual Tanakh Vol 1. For everything else, I’ll be using the Bible.

This morning, I slowly read the first 5 chapters of Genesis, referencing the commentary quite often. I loved all the references to Babylonian literature and how so much of the creation account is a comment on the myths of the day and how this was a revolution in thought.

I start each new year reading straight through the Bible. It’s a practice I first tried in 2020 and was amazed at the experience. There’s something really powerful about reading the Bible in its entirety within a relatively short period of time. I decided to make it a practice and it’s something I hope to do each year in January & February for the rest of my life.

I read a different translation of the Bible each year. Here are the versions I’ve read so far:

2020 - Christian Standard Bible
2023 - Bibliotheca (The American Literary Version)
2024 - Robert Alter (Hebrew Bible) / David Bentley Hart (New Testament)
2025 - King James Version
For 2026, I’m going to revisit the Bibliotheca version for The Latter Prophets, The Writings, The Apocrypha, and The New Testament. For The Five Books of Moses and The Former Prophets, I’m going to use a version and translation sent to me by Russ Roberts. It’s called The Intertextual Tanakh Volume 1 and it is in both English and Hebrew. Genesis starts at the back of the book. I’m really looking forward to this version and the commentary. I’ll start with that big red book on January 1st, 2026.

The Plan

This will be my fifth time reading straight through the Bible. Each time, I’ve finished within a two month timeframe. I always start on January 1st and try to finish by the end of February. It’s the only book I read during those two months. I then start back reading The Immortal Books on March 1st and continue until Summer Break in July.

To finish in two months, I need to be reading for an hour or two each day. I try to get the majority of this reading done early in the morning before my family wakes up. Coffee definitely helps. Then, I carry the Bible around with me and read it whenever I have an extra few minutes. It all adds up.

Finished Maria’s Scarf by . What an incredible story! Zoro grew up in extreme poverty and became one of the world’s most renowned drummers. A beautiful story very well written.
