KTLO-AM, a 250 watt radio station, went on the air in Mtn. Home Memorial Day weekend, 1953, featuring block programming of every conceivable format; 15 minutes of country music, 15 minutes of pop, 15 minutes of early rock ‘n roll, 15 minutes of classical, etc. Much programming was live in the early days. There was a studio piano, but the musicians would bring the other instruments. There were hospital admissions reports (in the days before privacy laws), reports from the local cattle sale barn, school reports and reports of births, weddings and deaths.
The last three letters in the station’s call letters stand for “Twin Lakes of the Ozarks”.
The original owner of KTLO-AM was Bob Wheeler of Harrison, who also owned KHOZ. He sold the station to Arvin “Monk” Stricklen in May, 1955. In 1966, KTLO-AM was upgraded to 1,000 watt stations. In 1970 Stricklen added KTLO-FM, a Class A 3,000 watt station. Stricklen sold the stations to Bob Knight and Doctors John and Robert Ahrens in September, 1975.
In April of 1995 Danny & Velma Ward and Charles and Scottie Earls bought the Ahrens’ share of the stations. The company upgraded KTLO-FM to 50,000 watts over Labor Day weekend, 1996. KCTT-FM, Oldies 101.7, was added over the 4th of July weekend, 1998. They purchased the station, licensed to Yellville, from Glen and Sherri Adams and erected a new tower in Gassville and moved the studios to the Mountain Home location.
In August 2010 the Knights and the Wards purchased the Earls’ stock and became equal partners in Mtn. Lakes Broadcasting Corp.; parent company of KTLO LLC. (Scott Earls remained a 2.7% Limited Partner in KTLO LLC, with the Knights and the Wards owning the balance of the company. In December, 2014 Mountain Lakes Broadcasting purchased Scott Earls’ 2.7% Limited Partnership; making the Knights and the Wards sole owners (50/50) of both KTLO LLC and Mountain Lakes Broadcasting Corp.)
In September, 2012 Mountain Lakes Broadcasting purchased KMAC-FM, licensed to Gainesville, Missouri, from Pearson Broadcasting. The call sign was changed to KBOD, nicknamed “The Boot” and the station returned to the air December 31, 2012 featuring a new hot country format and broadcasting from the KTLO studios at 620 Highway 5 North.
