Use this back-to-school tip that helps younger students get to know each other. 💡

Students start by drawing a self-portrait, and then the class discussion begins. Someone asks how many of us have brown eyes, or love dogs, and every answer becomes a reason to talk about what makes each student different.

From there, everyone moves around the room based on those shared traits, finding out who they have things in common with and who they don't.

By the end, the takeaway is simple enough for a five-year-old to hold onto. Different is a good thing. 💜

High school teacher John Skaggs doesn't force the awkward first-day icebreaker. He gets students moving instead.

He puts photos of his own life on the board (family, hobbies, coaching) and lets students interview him. Five minutes and he's a real person, not just "the teacher."

Then a Kagan-style mix-pair-share: students get up, fist bump a partner, and swap favorite ice cream flavors before they answer a single real question. Just movement, energy, and a low-stakes reason to talk.

By the time real content starts, they already know each other. Even the quietest ones are in.
