As the school year winds down, our latest free resource provides an easy way to keep your students engaged while bringing America’s 250th into the classroom!

It includes five primary sources teachers can use as bell ringers, lesson openers, or quick classroom activities.

Students can explore music, a Civil War letter, audio history connected to Juneteenth, a campaign ad, and Bicentennial coins.

No time for a full social studies lesson?

After 30+ years in K–5 classrooms, Melanie knows stories are one of the easiest ways to make room for meaningful learning during a packed school day.

That can look like:

πŸ“˜ A read-aloud
πŸ“š A trade book
πŸ“° A photo from a current event

That’s the magic. Social studies is NOT one more thing to add. It's already right there in the stories you are sharing.

Tag a teacher who made this year a little easier. πŸ’œ

Maybe they shared the lesson idea you needed, brought the energy when the room was flat, or helped a student turn a hard day around.

We see it all - the care, the creativity, the heart.

Thank you, teachers -- this month and every single day.

Less "we're reading because we have to." More "we have something worth talking about."

That's social studies and literacy working together! 🀝

A quick reminder that lessons that stick don’t always need a new block of time, especially in elementary.

A story, short source, map, biography, or real-world connection can give students something meaningful to read, write, and discuss.

Those moments build vocabulary, background knowledge, and inquiry skills while helping students hold onto ideas they can carry into next year.

Our blog post shares practical ways to bring social studies into your elementary literacy block without adding another full lesson to your day.
