BYU AND NC STATE have had a stranglehold on the NCAA Women’s XC Championships the past 5 years, sharing the half-decade’s 5 titles. Will it be the same story in ’25, when teams converge on Gans Creek XC Course on November 22? A TEAM THAT MAY finally be in a position to win its first NCAA title in 31 years — after a runner-up spot last fall continued its run of high finishes since ’19 — was not shy about showing its cards the last weekend in September. Powerhouse programs don’t often run with serious intent this early, but Iowa State’s showing at the Gans Creek Classic — home of this fall’s NCAA Champs — shows it’s serious about finally topping the podium in ’25. IN A CHAMPIONSHIPS full of sprint finishes, leave it to the marathoners to rely on the phototimer to separate gold from silver. The top medal went to Tanzanian Alphonce Felix Simbu, who launched a furious sprint to catch and pass unheralded German Amanal Petros just 3m from the finish. Both were timed in 2:09:48.
