¡Hay café en la casa!

A week ago today, I couldn’t make a latte at home. By then, I had been without electricity for a week with no estimated time of return. Peculiar how quickly your life can change from one day to the next- just like in books.

And this is by no means a post complaining about not being able to make a latte 😂. I know coffee is not a necessity (although sometimes it feels like it is), and I understand that circumstances can always be worse.

On the contrary, I’m sharing that as I made my coffee at home today, I was a lot more grateful than usual. Being able to open my fridge, grab my milk, and put this cafecito together in the comfort of my home was something I took for granted before going 11 days without power.

And there are still people out there without power. So please check on your northwest Indiana friends. 💜

This the first Cynthia Pelayo book I read. Another fellow reader raved about her so much that we went to her local book signing, so I bought three books for her to sign and spoke with her for a bit. After meeting her I was super excited to experience her creativity, especially since I grew up in Chicago and haven’t read many stories that take place there. This story had me in a trance literally in the first page. I love how descriptive this book was of fairytales and Chicago history; I actually had to look more into some of the history events mentioned. I also enjoyed how gruesome the Pied Piper scenes were, truly in classic horror fashion. Furthermore, Medina’s dependence on coffee resonated with me (LOL).

I really hope this book gets picked up to become a movie.

Day 6 without power so I’ve had quite a bit of down time to get some reading in.

💬 Personal review: I’m a little sad because this is the last book I needed to read related to the Cat and Mouse series. After reading Haunting and Hunting Adeline I became invested in Gigi’s story as well as Sibby’s. Gigi’s story was refreshing with her love for goth and character development after she realized she could do better than her husband. Ronaldo helping her find her confidence and peak her curiosity in a variety of ways 😜 was quite romantic. If you’re reading this book and haven’t read the Cat and Mouse duet, you need to read those two next to understand the ending.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC for The Reckoning of Leonora Guerrero by Lenette and wow—it did not disappoint!

As a huge fan of Threads of Her Braid, I was excited to dive back into Zúñiga’s work. While this story takes a slightly different direction, it completely hooked me. As a die-hard thriller and mystery lover, I was genuinely on the edge of my seat the entire time.

A few highlights:

The immersive soundtrack: She included a playlist at the beginning and embedded the songs right into the storyline, which made reading it such a cool experience.

The plot twist: I always try to guess the ending, but this one completely threw me for a loop!

If you love a good thriller, you need this on your radar. It drops this September, and I’ll definitely have copies available in my shop! Pre-order or grab it as soon as it releases—you won’t regret it.
