The cultivation, growth, and harvesting process of Potato usually includes the following stages:
1. Soil and Seed Preparation
Choose loose, well-drained, nutrient-rich soil.
Make raised beds about 20–25 cm high.
Select healthy seed potatoes without diseases; large potatoes can be cut into pieces with 1–2 sprouts each.
2. Planting Potatoes
Place the seed potatoes 5–7 cm deep in the soil.
Spacing:
Row to row: 60–70 cm
Plant to plant: 20–30 cm
Cover with soil and keep the soil moist after planting.
3. Growth Stages
After 7–15 days
The seed potatoes sprout and stems and leaves begin to grow.
After 20–40 days
The plant develops rapidly with strong stems and leaves.
Apply fertilizer, hill up the soil, and remove weeds.
After 45–70 days
Tubers begin forming and growing underground.
Adequate water is needed, but avoid waterlogging.
4. Plant Care
Water regularly, especially during tuber formation.
Apply balanced fertilizers: nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium.
Prevent and control pests and diseases such as:
Late blight
Bacterial wilt
Aphids and leaf-eating insects
5. Harvesting
Usually harvested after 80–100 days depending on the variety.
Harvest when the leaves turn yellow and the stems start drying.
Dig carefully to avoid damaging the tubers.
Dry the potatoes in a cool, airy place before storage.
