As I’ve shared, my little VHS WEREWOLF joke has actually taken off. I’ve been sitting on this new idea below and chatting with those who are involved for this really exciting idea (if you care about VHS that is). Here is the mission statement of sorts. Please read and share:
It’s time we stop calling it "Dead Media." 📼
Instead, let’s start calling it what it really is: . Repeat: RECYCLABLE MEDIA.
We are witnessing a massive resurgence in the love for VHS. There is nothing quite like the tactile feeling of a tape or the nostalgia of that grainy picture. But as this community grows, we are facing a fork in the road.
The Reality Check:
An estimated 1.5 BILLION VHS tapes were produced during the format's golden era.
Right now, millions of those tapes are sitting in attics, basements, and thrift store bins, slowly gathering mold and waiting to be dumped in a landfill. This is a massive environmental challenge—but also a massive opportunity.
Some companies are starting to manufacture new plastic tapes to meet the demand. But why create new plastic when we are sitting on a mountain of history that just needs a little love?
Wait—Are we erasing history?
Absolutely not. We are collectors first. We hand-sort every batch we find. The rare, the coveted, and the films that deserve to be preserved are set aside and saved. We are focusing specifically on the tapes that have zero resale value and, let's be honest, no one actually wants to watch.
As great as the movie "Gulag" is (it isn’t), no one is rushing to buy it or even putting it on in the background. These are the tapes we are saving from the dumpster and transforming.
Our Mission: The Ultimate VHS Repurpose Project.
We are committed to giving these forgotten tapes a second life. Here is how we are closing the loop:
♻️ 1. RESCUE: We source vintage tapes that would otherwise be thrown away.
✨ 2. RESET: We professionally clean and “blank” the tapes, making them ready for your new recordings and memories.
🎨 3. REFRESH: We’ve partnered with an incredible HUMAN artist Michael Glowacki of Exist Design Studio to design new J-cards that capture that classic, nostalgic "blank tape" aesthetic—giving them a fresh look that honors the past. 🛡️ 4. RE-CASE: Whenever possible, we use recycled hard shell cases, ensuring we aren't adding new plastic to the world.
🖼️ 5. RE-IMAGINE: What about tapes that can't be saved? We never toss them. We provide the shells to artists (have you seen the lamps and wall art on Etsy?!) to transform into innovative art pieces.
It’s about preserving the nostalgia we love without leaving a heavy footprint on the planet. Whether you are a collector, a recorder, or an artist, you can help us save these tapes.
Don’t let the history rot. Give it a new story.
Stay tuned.
