It takes a lot to smile. No one is honest about that person in the mirror at 6 a.m., dealing with all your insecurities. Then we dress it all up and step out into this brutal world… and smile.

I know there’s a shared pain in humanity, but nobody really knows the true internal struggles we carry individually or how we manage them. All they see is the smile. They don’t know how close someone is to the breaking point, or how far they’ve come from actually breaking. They just see the smile.

So today, I encourage you to smile at the person in the mirror. Not the one we put on for the world, but the one who’s had to carry all of it and still shows up. Even with all the pain and suffering in the world, to be able to think about smiling, and actually do it? That in itself is a revolutionary act.

I’m living my ancestors’ dreams, and I’ll be damned if I don’t smile while doing it.
