Normalize saying it to their face:

"We do not have the kind of relationship that permits you to talk to me like that. Watch how you speak to me."

Here's what's actually happening beneath the surface: some people mistake your civility for permission. They watch you stay polite, stay patient, stay easy to work with — and they quietly decide that means they have room to push. Your restraint doesn't read as strength to them. It reads as an open door.

So close it the moment it opens. Not next week. Not after the third time. Not once you've stockpiled enough resentment to finally find your voice. Immediately. The first time.

And understand this clearly: the people who respect a boundary named early were never going to cross it in the first place. The ones who need it named twice were always planning to take everything you let them.

Your composure is not a concession. Your kindness is not a corridor. Name the line early — and the people worth keeping in your life will never need you to raise your voice to defend it.
