I’m honored to be speaking at the 2025 National Dance Education Organization Conference!

My session, “Read, Move, Create: Movement-Based Strategies to Support Literacy,” explores how dance  can strengthen literacy skills, deepen reading comprehension, and bring the joy of reading to life through the body.

Can’t wait to connect with other creative educators who believe in the power of movement to change minds and lives. 💛

Session: Read, Move, Create: Movement-Based Strategies to Support Literacy

If you're feeling the pressure to “get control” of your class right now… I get it.

And here’s the truth nobody wants to say out loud:

It’s not always about “what’s underneath the behavior.”

Sometimes?

🔹 Your routines aren’t solid.

🔹 Expectations aren’t clear.

🔹 There’s no system for follow-through—no matter how much you care.

And none of that means you’re a bad teacher.

It means you need a reset. A plan. And support that actually makes sense for creative classrooms.

So here’s your reminder:

📌 Connection and structure can coexist.

📌 Joy doesn’t cancel out boundaries.

📌 You don’t need “control”—you need consistency.

Let’s be honest, classroom management in arts spaces hits different.

You’ve got bodies moving, materials flying, music playing—and 30+ students with big energy and even bigger ideas.

And somehow, folks still expect your classroom to run like a silent library.

Here’s the truth:

You don’t need tighter control.

You need clearer systems.

You need routines that actually fit your kind of classroom.

This carousel breaks down the do’s and don’ts that have helped me and the educators I support create structure without sacrificing creativity.

Because yes—students can lead, follow routines, and stay engaged…

But only if you’ve taken time to teach, practice, and reinforce those systems.

Belonging isn’t built by accident. It’s not a one-time activity, a poster on the wall, or a cute quote in the hallway.

It’s baked into the way we start class, the way we speak to students, and the way we design opportunities for them to contribute.

In creative classrooms, *how* we build community matters just as much as what we teach.

Here are 5 ways I’ve made space for belonging in real-time—with real students.

🧠 Low-stakes reflection

🗣 Student voice embedded in routines

📚 Intentional use of identity-affirming texts

🎭 Collaborative creation

✨ Leadership that feels earned, not forced

This isn’t about being perfect.

It’s about being intentional.

It’s about students walking into a space and knowing: *this classroom was built with me in mind.*

I used to believe I had to choose — either focus on the standards or let my creativity shine. And honestly? It left me feeling boxed in.

But here’s what I’ve learned over the years: you don’t have to choose. You can have both. And when you do, students lean in, connect deeper, and actually remember what they learned.

That’s why I’m inviting you to my free masterclass:

How to Use Arts Integration to Deepen Student Learning

📅 When: September 16 | 6:30 PM CST
💻 Where: Virtual — join from anywhere!

In this 90-minute session, I’ll share:
✔️ What arts integration really is (and what it’s not)
✔️ Strategies that work across grade levels + subjects
✔️ How to keep learning rigorous and joyful
✔️ Tools you can use right away in your classroom

Ever feel like you’re teaching your heart out… but your students just aren’t connecting?

I know that feeling. Teaching can sometimes feel like a tug-of-war:
😩 Cover the standard.
😩 Get them ready for the test.
😩 Keep them engaged (without burning yourself out).

When I taught about Alexander the Great, I used to do it the “traditional” way — textbook, notes, review. My students memorized facts, but they didn’t own the learning.

So I tried something different.

I brought in Iron Maiden’s rock song “Alexander the Great.” 🎸

Here’s what we did:
🎶 Listened without lyrics
📖 Listened again, following along with the printed lyrics
✍🏽 Read + annotated the song like it was a historical text

And suddenly… they were locked in. The class came alive. Discussions got richer. They understood not just what Alexander did, but why it mattered.

That’s the power of arts integration. It takes the same standards you already have to teach (in this case, AH.24: Explain the conquest of Greece by Macedonia and the spread of Hellenistic culture by Alexander the Great) and brings them to life through creativity.

And this isn’t just about making learning “fun.” It’s about making it stick.

On September 16, I’m hosting a free 90-minute masterclass to help you do the same:
How to Use Arts Integration to Deepen Student Learning (Without Choosing Between Creativity and Curriculum).

You’ll learn:
✔️ What arts integration really is (and what it’s not)
✔️ Practical strategies for any subject area
✔️ How to design culturally responsive, equity-centered lessons that engage your students deeply.

Because teaching should never feel like choosing between rigor and creativity. You can have both. 💫
