Las cihuateteo, or spirits of women who died during childbirth, were likened to warriors dying in violent battle. During labor, a woman was thought to capture the soul of her unborn fetus as a warrior defeated his opponent. But these spirits could be malevolent certain times of the year. Aztecs believed they would roam the earth stealing children, causing mischief, illness, and even death. Stones were erected to appease them, and mothers would tell their children to beware of the cihuateteo.
