Pure Tennessee

Pure Tennessee Tennessee born. Tennessee aching.

The food, the music, the backroads, the people — all of it, brought to life through AI imagery, for everyone who still carries this place in their chest.

The first self-service grocery store in the world was a Piggly Wiggly in Memphis, and Tennessee has never bragged about it near enough. 🛒

Clarence Saunders opened it in 1916 and changed how the whole planet shops. You picked your own groceries off the shelf, and nobody had done that before. He made a fortune, started a pink marble mansion folks still call the Pink Palace, then lost it all in a Wall Street fight before the roof was on.

The city finished his palace as a museum. Only in Tennessee does a grocery man leave behind a castle.

Carnton is the prettiest porch in Franklin, Tennessee, and it once held the bodies of four generals.

After the Battle of Franklin on November 30, 1864, the McGavock house became the largest field hospital for miles. They laid the dead across that back gallery and nursed near 300 men through one night. Carrie McGavock later gave two acres so almost 1,500 soldiers could rest together.

I did not know quiet until I stood on those boards. Nothing out here feels that old.

What Tennessee place made you go still the first time you saw it?

Elkmont in the Great Smoky Mountains is one of the only places on earth where the fireflies blink all at once, and for about two weeks every summer the whole hillside pulses in the dark. ✨

It is a real phenomenon called synchronous fireflies, deep in the Smokies of East Tennessee, and people travel from all over the world just to stand in that field and watch. I grew up chasing lightning bugs in a mason jar an hour down the road and never knew the rarest show in the world was right there.

Now my summer nights just stay flat and dark, and I did not know that was a thing a person could miss.

Tell me about the summer nights where you grew up, the ones you can still see when you close your eyes.

Hattie B's turned Nashville hot chicken into a dare, and I have watched grown men lie about how hot they ordered. 🔥

The Midtown spot on 19th has run the same ladder since 2012: Southern, Mild, Medium, Hot, Damn Hot, then Shut the Cluck Up. Prince's may have invented the stuff, but Hattie B's is where the bragging got out of hand.

Six years gone and I still miss standing in that line, sweating before I even ordered.

Where do you land on that heat chart, and no fibbing?

Goo Goo Cluster was invented in Nashville in 1912, and it is the reason every candy bar after it got greedy. 🍫

The Standard Candy Company piled caramel, marshmallow, roasted peanuts, and chocolate into one wrapper back when the rest of the world still thought a candy bar meant one single flavor. It was the first combination candy bar in America, and it came out of Tennessee.

I still have a box mailed to me every year, because some flavors are really just an address you can taste.

Tell me the one Tennessee snack you would drive back across a state line to get your hands on.

There is a crystal cave hidden inside a Memphis cemetery, and I cannot make a soul up here believe it. 💎

The Crystal Shrine Grotto at Memorial Park runs sixty feet into the hillside, packed with five tons of quartz, hand carved by folk artist Dionicio Rodriguez from 1935 to 1943. The whole life of Christ is sculpted scene by scene, and the walls glitter.

Out here they think I am making it up. We had a jeweled cave before it was cool.

What Tennessee place do people swear you invented?

Union City, Tennessee has a 50 acre museum with a 120 foot tower. 😅

Discovery Park of America opened out in Obion County in 2013, and it is no dusty roadside stop. Dinosaur skeletons, a 20,000 gallon aquarium, log cabins, and an observation deck you climb straight up through Dinosaur Hall. A local family who made a fortune in home decor built the whole thing for their hometown.

Only in West Tennessee would that be hiding behind a cornfield.

What is the most unexpected thing you ever found in a small Tennessee town?

St. Mary's downtown is the oldest church still standing in Nashville, finished in 1847.

Two fluted columns and a plain pediment, tucked between buildings on Fifth Avenue where I must have walked past it a hundred times chasing lunch or a parking spot. I never once went in. After the Battle of Nashville it sheltered wounded men from both sides on its floor, and it was the cathedral here until 1914.

I would give a lot to sit in that quiet now.

Is there a place back home you always meant to stop and never did?

Brownsville, Tennessee is home to one of the strangest wonders in the whole state, and most people drive right past it. It is called the Mindfield, a skyline of welded steel rising straight up over Main Street.

A man named Billy Tripp started building it back in the late 1980s and never really stopped. Water towers, beams, ladders, even a whole airplane tail, all bolted into one giant autobiography in metal. 😅

He has said he will keep adding to it until the day he dies, and that Brownsville will be his final resting place.

Most towns settle for a statue of a general. What is the strangest roadside wonder near the town you grew up in?

Cragfont in Castalian Springs was the finest house on the whole Tennessee frontier in 1802. 🪨

General James Wi******er brought craftsmen all the way from Maryland to build it out of native limestone, two full stories, up on a rocky bluff over a spring. I grew up an hour from Gallatin and never heard of it until I moved away and went hunting for home in library books.

It still stands off Highway 25, quiet as ever.

Did y'all know Tennessee had a stone mansion this old?
