What’s it like to work with Sage Keffer at Music Row Music Group?

Interning at MRMG was such a great experience! Sage is really encouraging and did all he could to make sure I got the most out of the internship. I really got to dive into the “behind the scenes” of the music industry and learned a lot about all the hard work it takes to be successful. Some of the exciting things I got to work on included branding, videography, & a marketing plan, which was really interesting. I would highly recommend interning at MRMG, I know I really enjoyed it and got a lot out of it!

My internship experience was practically valuable, stimulating, and enjoyable. You will get an inside scoop into how the Nashville music industry works, and how it is possible to succeed as an independent artist in the Nashville music industry. Additionally, you will build skills that are relevant to almost any career in business.
Even if you ultimately decide to go into another industry (which I did), the day to day tasks as well as the larger projects you will work on will help you build business acumen.
As an intern, Sage took a deep consideration of my interests and unique talents. He allowed me considerable freedom as to what I would work on. As such, I dabbled in marketing, branding, and public relations type work. My research skills were greatly increased. I learned how to use iMovie. I made contact with fans via social media .
I also did a lot of work on connecting with third parties and contacting various organizations in order to expand the reach of the brand. Overall the skills I learned were quite valuable and I accomplished much to brag about in interviews.
Besides for the work itself, it was a pleasure working with and getting to know Sage. He is friendly, supportive, and helpful. He set excellent expectations and did whatever he could to make the internship a worthwhile experience. We had excellent discussions about the industry and life/success in general. If you work hard and be yourself you will build your resume and make a friend!

Interning for Sage was a really awesome experience because I was able to obtain a well-rounded experience in the music industry. No two days were the same and I was given a lot of responsibility with projects. I did everything from social media outreach and promotional activities to extensive research and video editing. I highly recommend this position to someone who wants to work for a smaller music label because the learning is very hands on. Sage was very helpful with any questions and genuinely cares about his interns experience and future. I’m so glad I spent a semester interning with Sage at Music Row Music Group and believe that the experience has been very beneficial to my career.

I greatly enjoyed my time spent working with Sage at Music Row Music Group. Not only did I gain great marketing experience, but I also received a valuable look into the music and acting industries. I became comfortable making cold calls to casting directors, and I greatly improved my skills in Microsoft Excel and data organization. Sage was absolutely wonderful! He works hard to give his interns valuable experience in a variety of different areas and is open to suggestions on how to make the internship even more beneficial. My time spent at Music Row Music Group was time well spent, and I believe that it will open many doors for me in the future.

Interning for Sage at Music Row Music Group was an incredible experience. I was actively involved in everything from artist promotion to video editing, developing and utilizing a variety of skills along the way which are crucial to succeeding in the music industry. Sage was a very hands-on teacher, with great attention to detail. This has always been my best method of learning, as it helps me to actually retain knowledge. Sage was behind my shoulder whenever I needed assistance with something, yet he left many aspects of the work open to my own interpretation and creativity. Furthermore, the trust he placed on me with certain projects instilled a great deal of confidence in me. This was reflected through everything I did at Music Row Music Group.
As a person, Sage is truly one of the most genuine people I have ever met. He conducts himself very professionally, yet creates an extremely fun work environment rooted in respect (and some great humor). His positive attitude is infectious and definitely impacts your desire to work and contribute your ideas. By the end of my internship, I developed a true mutual friendship with Sage. Overall, my experience at Music Row Music Group was one for which I am sincerely grateful and wouldn't change. I obtained a great deal of knowledge and insight into the the music industry, and I made an excellent connection and friend in Sage. Thanks for everything, Sage!

My internship at Music Row Music Group with Sage was a great experience. I was able to work on many different projects throughout the semester that helped me gain more knowledge about the inner workings of a small independent label. Sage was great to work with and was very encouraging. It was very easy to work in the environment he provided and was also a great place to be a creative while working within the project. Before the internship, I had never worked on any type of promotional material but over the course of the semester, I found myself working on many types from helping to start a new bio for Sage’s website, coming up with quick pitches for Sage’s radio singles, and several other promotional projects as well. Over the course of the internship I also learned basic video editing skills and also sharpened my creative writing skills. It was a rewarding experience that kept me working hands on with plenty of projects as a part of the team.

Interning with Sage at MRMG was such a great experience! I was able to deal with many different things in an extremely hands on environment. I recreated Sage's website, which was a great but fun challenge. I really enjoyed my time interning for Sage and think that I gained a lot of real world experience in working for him, from editing videos, working in excel, and making the website. It was such a great experience!

Working at Music Row Music Group was a great experience! Sage was always accommodating and made sure to ask what my interests and future goals were so that he could assign tasks for me that both benefited him and allowed me to gain valuable knowledge and skills. Sage also asked my opinions about his projects and future endeavors and showed me some really cool things about the industry. I truly enjoyed my time interning here.

Working at Music Row Music Group with Sage has been such a great experience! I loved getting to work at the CMA Music Festival. What a great opportunity! This internship is one of the best because it's very hands on, and you get to do a lot. I edited videos, worked with social media, and helped with artist promotion and marketing. This internship experience really helped me later on in my career and is a main reason why I got hired at the company I'm at now. I couldn't have asked for a better experience or a better boss. Sage is the best boss ever!

Working at Music Row Music Group has been a great experience because I was able to work in a comfortable and easy-learning environment. Since Sage was able to take time to personally teach me how to do all the different tasks relevant to the music industry, I learned a variety of skills. The internship is completely different from the stereotypical pencil-pushing and coffee-grabbing jobs, but rather hands-on. I recommend anyone, even for those who do not have any musical background, who is willing to learn about music to grab this opportunity to learn.

My internship with Sage Keffer really helped in showing me the behind-the-scenes work that artists put into their professions. MRMG was a comfortable yet professional environment, and Sage was extremely encouraging and patient with me. I had little previous knowledge of the entertainment industry, so Sage worked with me by teaching me networking strategies and marketing skills that stretch far beyond the entertainment industry. He provided me with several opportunities to network with music industry professionals, and I learned so much from this hands-on experience. Sage made sure my work suited my preferences and skills so that working for him never felt like a chore. Overall, a rewarding and fun internship!

My internship with Sage Keffer at Music Row Music Group was a terrific learning experience. I had the opportunity to truly contribute to company operations and be fully immersed in marketing and promotional activity. Sage allowed me to introduce new ideas for viral marketing on Facebook and other social media websites, which included the freedom to research and select applications for use on artist fan pages. I also gained experience using email marketing interfaces like Constant Contact and MailChimp; it was through these interfaces that I created email newsletters for promotion and public relations. Because Sage is not afraid to let his interns handle tasks that require the development of particular skills, he encourages hands-on learning. For instance, I was given the opportunity to edit and create a DVD based on live showcase footage. At first, I didn’t really know how to use video editing software, but Sage was patient and encouraging. By the end of the internship, my hands-on
experience made me proficient with small-scale video production for promotional and booking purposes; I was even allowed to help with the creation of sponsorship proposals. Overall, interning at MRMG helped me to develop key marketing and promotional skills for working in the music business, and I also made a terrific contact in Sage Keffer!

Belmont Intern at MRMG, Spring 2011

Working with Sage Keffer at MRMG has been a wonderful experience. Since this was my first internship was worried about if I would treated like a stereotypical intern but that was not the case. By proving that I am trustworthy and responsible, Sage gave me tasks that helped me gain real experience and knowledge about the music industry. This work included designing fan e-mails, booking gigs, video production, obtaining licenses, etc. Sage also provided me with opportunities for networking, like volunteering at the Miller-Harris golf tournament. I was able to meet many executives from publishing companies as well as other industry professionals.
One of the most rewarding projects I was a part of while working with MRMG was acquiring licenses for Sage’s most recent album. Sage really trusted me as the only publishing experience I had was from taking the class at Belmont. Through that project I was able to see how the publishing industry really operates. I learned how to interpret licensing agreements, correct fees for licensing, and track down publishing companies. I also was able to form relationships with publishers and record label reps.
I honestly do not think I could have had a better first-internship experience. Sage is very open to answering questions and never makes me feel incompetent. He doesn’t expect me to know everything there is to know about the music business just because I am a Belmont student but rather wants to enhance the knowledge I gained from the classroom.

Belmont Intern at MRMG, Fall 2010

In the spring of 2009, I stumbled across Sage's booth at Belmont's internship fair, and I'm so thankful that I did. Not only have I received first hand experience working in the music industry, but Sage Keffer is perhaps the most gracious and patient teacher/boss I could have ever imagined. This being my first internship, I had no idea what to expect. I'd heard stories from other students whose internship time with big corporations was
spent making photocopies and delivering coffee... I love seeing the looks on their faces when I can truthfully and excitedly say that those stories are nothing like my experience with MRMG. Since August, I have drawn up endorsement proposal templates, researched and corresponded with hundreds of venues and festivals in hopes of booking a 2010 tour, managed his media accounts (Facebook, MySpace, Sonicbids, Constant Contact, his personal website), and helped obtain licenses from the writers of some songs on his upcoming album. And to top it all off, Sage has gone above and beyond to make me feel welcome and irreplaceable in his company. To all of those who are considering an internship with Sage in the spring semester, be aware that this internship will require you to be detail-oriented, proactive, and eager to learn, and because of that, it is so completely worthwhile.

Sage is a great guy to work for. He challenges me every day with each task that I am set out to do. I went into the internship with an open mind and the willingness to learn anything I could about the music industry. Therefore, I have completed several tasks covering a wide range from organizing and managing his fan base to playing an instrumental role in creating a sponsorship proposal for him. I have also created a statistical analysis of his fan base, revised and edited his promotional sheet, and created an APCA proposal for other artists to join Sage at the national convention. I highly recommend interning for Sage. It is a great way to get your foot in the door into the music business outside of the classroom. He keeps you engaged and eager to learn more about the world of the music industry.

Working with Sage Keffer at MRMG has been an extremely valuable experience for me. This is not your typical internship centered upon busy work. Not only does Sage take into account the areas of music business that you as the intern would like to focus on, but he patiently and fully explains the essential processes in order to provide a thorough understanding for a career in the music industry. In addition to methods of booking, marketing, and licensing, I have learned to communicate effectively with pros in the business world. No previous experience is necessary; you simply must be motivated to work hard and be interested to learn! I was lucky to find this internship that allows me to further my music career and to meet many members of the music business both in Nashville and overseas. I strongly advise those of you who are interested to join me in working with Sage Keffer while at the same enjoying his musical talent!
