In this episode, we hear how welcoming exchange students into classrooms can benefit entire school communities! AFS students in Indiana and Washington discuss their experiences as US high school students: activities they’ve been involved in, how things are different from home, and the positive impact of supportive teachers.
We also get the perspective of the teachers who work with these students. How have AFS students shared their culture and unique perspective in school, providing learning opportunities for their peers?
Guests: Medyen Jubran, Abbas Mortada, Mark Liepe, Brandi Asher (East Noble High School, Kendallville, IN); Sai Charan Tharmani and Annie DeGroot (Rainier Beach High School, Seattle, WA)

AFS-USA has exciting news to share!
Five young educators from the US will receive a $2,000 scholarship to participate in the 27th Session of the Youth Assembly: Dare to Reshape the World. The Assembly takes place on August 11-14th in New York City and will draw several hundred young people ages 18-32 from around the world.
The $2,000 scholarship covers the cost of the conference, a special workshop for educators, lodging, and most meals. Educators will gather to learn more about the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals and interactive intercultural learning in their classrooms. Participating educators will be encouraged to network and build connections throughout the day that will help them broaden their network and connect their classroom to communities in other parts of the world to bring that learning to life. All conference attendees will gain the relevant resources and opportunities they need to reshape the world. Ideal applicants are global citizens who are interested in global issues and sustainable development.
If you don’t personally know an educator that would fit these criteria, please copy the information above and share it with a local school administrator and encourage them to nominate a young teacher in their building! This is just one example of how AFS-USA gives back to schools!
Nominate an educator before April 15th!
