Praise for LISTENERS DARE: Hearing God in the Sermon by Will Willimon
“There is no shortage of resources out there for how to prepare and preach a sermon, and yet faith comes from hearing. In turning our attention to the homiletical process of listening, Willimon has given clergy and laity alike a true gift. Together, we get to listen for God’s daring Word—a word that in our hearing brings about holy obedience, persistent hope, and daring discipleship.”
—Karoline M. Lewis, Marbury E. Anderson Chair of Biblical Preaching, Professor of Biblical Preaching, Luther Seminary; Program Director, Festival of Homiletics

“Why are annual stewardship campaigns essential?”
People do not drift into good giving habits. They decide into them. The reason they decide is because someone asks them to decide. An effective annual stewardship campaign is the best way to ask.

Teaching sermons in conversation

In preaching toward a vision of the public sphere characterized by the kingdom of God, our kingdom-talk is known by the rhetorical practice of Jesus: friendly and frank, rooted in love. In essence, reordered relationships in the kingdom of God are empowered by the plain-speech practices like those of Jesus. As those of us who have preached week to week in these contentious times know, this is not always easy! All listening is an act of submission. In our cultural context, to submit to these ancient Jews; to bend our lives to this strange, disorderly collection of texts; to acquiesce to instruction by the church and its officials; to resist the arrogance of finding our own way; to allow others, saints both living and dead, to lead us down a path we would not, could not go on our own, requires a lifetime of training for both the preacher and listeners.

“Why does spiritually focused stewardship education work better than fund-raising methods?”
Financial stewardship helps us to overcome the temptation to break the first commandment and put the false idol of money first, ahead of the God who revealed his love for us through Jesus Christ.

The Holy Spirit enables preachers to say more than we intend and to do greater work among our listeners than we know. Our hope is that what Jesus did on the road to Emmaus, he will now do to us: “Then he interpreted for them the things written about himself in all the scriptures, starting with Moses and going through all the Prophets,” so that the listeners eventually exclaimed, “Weren’t our hearts on fire when he spoke to us along the road and when he explained the scriptures for us?” (Luke 24:27, 32).

“Why does the Consecration Sunday Stewardship Program Guide work so well?” Rather than requesting financial contributions to “pay the bills” or “support the budget,” Consecration Sunday asks people to grow spiritually by giving a percentage of their income to the Lord’s work through their congregations.

Consecration Sunday approaches financing the ministries of your congregation by teaching stewardship from a spiritual perspective rather than a fundraising perspective. It focuses on the question, “What is God calling me to do?” rather than, “What does the church need in order to pay its bills?” A proven winner, the Consecration Sunday Stewardship Program has helped thousands of congregations increase financial giving by 15% to 30%.

THE CONCISE GUIDE TO CONGREGATIONAL CARE
Prayers, Scriptures, and Other Tools for Grief and Loss
Grief and loss can be complicated. There’s no right way to heal from grief, and though people learn to live with grief over time, there’s no prescribed timeline that lessens the hurt or eases the process. Be gentle with someone grieving.

Bet you have in mind how a “good sermon” sounds, even though you’ve not had the nerve to share your criteria with your preacher. What’s a sermon for? Try this: A sermon is “good” when God chooses to reveal to God’s people through a preacher what God has to say and enables listeners to hear and faithfully respond to what they’ve heard.
