The Department of Defense spends roughly $5 billion each year on Permanent Change of Station moves. That includes household goods shipments, travel reimbursements, temporary lodging, and the logistics required to move families between duty stations.

In a May 2025 directive, defense leadership instructed the military services to reduce PCS-related costs over time, with a long-term target of up to 50 percent by 2030. The guidance outlines a phased reduction and focuses heavily on discretionary moves, particularly those within the continental United States.

When a military family prepares to PCS, finding the right school is often the top priority. Many campuses proudly label themselves as "military-friendly" to show their support for military-connected students. But because there is no official government definition for the term, it can be tough for parents to know exactly what kind of resources to expect before they arrive.

Now, a more defined path is gaining ground. Meet Purple Star Schools. Across the country, more campuses are earning the special designation, giving military families a recognizable place to begin when choosing a school during a PCS move.

The Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) is currently in the middle of a massive expansion of its Commissary CLICK2GO® on the GO! grocery delivery service. The ongoing rollout, which began in late June, is adding 108 stateside commissaries to the delivery roster and is expected to be complete by the end of September.

This massive summer expansion didn't happen overnight. DeCA first launched grocery delivery as a pilot program in 2022 at a handful of commissaries. The goal was to see whether military shoppers would actually use the service and whether it could be expanded successfully. The answer was a resounding yes.

Following that success, DeCA announced on June 16 that it would push the service to an additional 108 stateside locations throughout the summer.

If you've used Commissary CLICK2GO for curbside pickup, you're already familiar with the basics. Customers shop online, select their local commissary, and choose their groceries.

The delivery option works similarly, except your groceries come directly to you. Orders are placed online, delivery windows are selected during checkout, and groceries are delivered directly to eligible addresses within the installation's service area.

The expansion of Commissary CLICK2GO doorstep delivery represents a broader effort by the Department of Defense to modernize quality-of-life benefits. For decades, military families had to choose between private-sector convenience and commissary savings. Now, they finally get both.

For years, the surest way for a military spouse to learn whether an on-base child development center had an opening wasn't a government hotline or an official DoD portal; it was a Facebook group.

Because the DoD lacks a centralized, accurate way to track capacity at individual bases, local waitlists often become clogged with duplicate entries or outdated requests. For families, the consequence of this data failure is high, as military spouses often put their careers on hold, and families stretch their budgets to cover private off-base care, simply because they cannot get a clear timeline on when an on-base spot might actually open.

Three proposals, folded into a single bill and now advancing inside the Fiscal Year 2027 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), aim to reshape how the Pentagon recruits child care workers, partners with outside organizations to staff its centers, and tracks capacity and unmet need across the entire department on a standardized, recurring basis.

The bill's core provisions fall into three buckets:
1. Growing the number of available child care spots
2. Creating new partnerships
3. Standardizing data collection

The inclusion of the HERO Act provisions in the final NDAA will test whether the DoD can successfully modernize its family support infrastructure to meet current workforce demands.

For decades, the moving truck has been as much a fixture of military life as uniforms and deployment orders. Every two to three years, hundreds of thousands of service members pack up their households, pull children out of school mid-year, and ask spouses to walk away from jobs, all in service of a personnel system built around near-constant rotation. That system is now, for the first time in a generation, being forced to shrink.

What sets this round of PCS reform apart from prior, failed attempts at reducing moves is the framing. Previous efforts to rein in relocation frequency stalled because they were pitched primarily as budget exercises, and military leaders pushed back on the grounds that moves were operationally necessary.

This time, the Pentagon and the Army, in particular, are explicitly linking fewer moves to unit readiness, not just individual family welfare, by arguing that formations that stay together longer fight better together.

That reframing may be the detail that finally gives the policy staying power across administrations and budget cycles, because it ties family stability directly to a metric the Pentagon has always prioritized: lethality.

For the families of fallen service members, the paperwork begins almost immediately after the knock on the door. Within a year of receiving a military death gratuity or Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (SGLI) payout, surviving spouses and children currently must decide whether to roll those funds into tax-advantaged accounts such as Roth IRAs or Coverdell Education Savings Accounts, or lose the penalty-free option altogether.

A new bipartisan bill introduced in the House would change that. The GRACE (Granting Rollover Access and Contribution Extensions) for Military Survivors Act, introduced on June 25 and announced on June 29, would extend that window from one year to three, giving grieving families more time to make long-term financial decisions without a federal deadline compounding their loss.

There’s a handful of phrases most military spouses can predict they’ll hear, almost like clockwork, the second life gets chaotic. "I don’t know how you do it." "You’re so strong."

Military spouses don't need reminders that military life is hard. We already know. What we hope for is empathy.

You don't need to fully understand every part of their military lifestyle to offer support. You can be a safe place. When you choose empathy over dismissal, you remind the people you care about that they aren’t alone.
