A few of my more sciencey friends and twitter replies lead me to find out that I captured something quite rare today. This is a "supernumerary" rainbow. These form when light waves interfere with each other after passing through small raindrops, creating extra faint pastel bands just inside the main rainbow. Pretty cool stuff!

This was taken just outside of Nashville, TN today.

A tornado outbreak is expected today across parts of the mid south and Ohio valley. All hazards of severe weather (tornadoes, damaging winds, large hail) are all on the table today with any of these storms. The tornado threat decreases the further away you get from the pink circled region. Stay weather aware today.

A significant severe weather event is appearing more and more likely on Monday in the mid south. All hazards are expected (damaging wind, large hail, and tornadoes). But with this setup in particular given our negatively tilted trough, high shear values, and very unstable environment, I am fairly concerned about tornado potential currently.

Still some things to figure out, but all models are honing in on this area in the mid south circled in pink below for what appears to at least be the “bullseye” of this risk area.

Stay tuned for updates.

A significant damaging wind event is set to take place tomorrow. The SPC has outlined a broad wind risk, with the focus of the risk being in the red 30% and pink 45% regions. This is a pretty elevated risk.

The reasonable max intensity for wind gusts will be upwards of 75mph according to the SPC. Though I would not be surprised to see a few 75mph+ reports tomorrow night.

Tornadoes are likely tomorrow within our line of storms. The SPC has gone ahead and issued a broad tornado risk, with the focus of the risk being in the yellow 10% region.

The reasonable max intensity will be EF2 according to the SPC for most of this risk area.

A significant severe weather outbreak is expected on Sunday into Sunday night.

The SPC has put out a 45% Significant risk for Sunday’s significant severe weather outbreak expected. With that, our Enhanced Risk (Level 3/5) for severe weather has expanded. Not something you see every day.
