⚡️ HERO SPOTLIGHT: THE BRAVERY AT FOB EDI — THE MIRACLE MEDEVAC AND THE UNBREAKABLE BOND OF THE BATTLEFIELD.
In January 2012, in the dust of Helmand Province, Afghanistan, Marine Lance Corporal Winder Perez was struck by an enemy Rocket-Propelled Gr***de (RPG).

In a freak occurrence that defies mathematical odds, the highly explosive rocket pierced straight through his thigh, tearing through muscle and tissue—but it failed to detonate. He was alive, but he was a literal walking bomb.

Standard operating procedure for medical evacuation helicopters is completely clear: you never put a casualty with unexploded ordnance (UXO) on board. The risk to the crew, the helicopter, and the other wounded is mathematically too high. One rough landing or static shock could blow the entire bird out of the sky.

But the crew of the US Army "Dustoff" Medevac helicopter looked at the rules, looked at their wounded brother, and made a choice: We are not leaving him behind.

They threw out the regulation book, loaded Perez into the chopper, and flew a high-stakes, nerve-wracking flight back to Forward Operating Base (FOB) Edi.
