Sergeant Theresa Flannery (U.S. Army)
Today we honor the memory of Sergeant Theresa Flannery, a dedicated soldier whose courage on a rooftop in Iraq was captured in an iconic photograph, but whose service ultimately came at a tragic, invisible cost.
In August 2004, during the intense Battle of Najaf, Sgt. Flannery and her unit were trapped on a rooftop under a relentless onslaught of enemy sniper fire and RPGs. During the ferocious two-hour engagement, a bullet meant for her tragically struck a fellow soldier beside her. Ignoring the extreme danger, Flannery immediately leaped into action to care for the wounded, her uniform becoming soaked in their blood.
While scrambling to find cover amid the chaos, she fell and shattered the bones in her wrist. For her exceptional bravery, composure, and life-saving actions under direct enemy fire, she was awarded the Purple Heart and the Army Commendation Medal with "V" device for valor.

THE INVISIBLE SCARS:
Though Theresa returned home to Kentucky as a highly decorated hero, the war followed her. Behind closed doors, she waged a silent, agonizing battle with severe Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), plagued by violent nightmares and deep depression.
On May 20, 2010, at just 32 years old, Theresa passed away in her sleep. Her father firmly believed her death was directly tied to the heavy psychological burden and invisible scars she carried home from Najaf. She left behind a young son, Nicholas, and a legacy of profound sacrifice.
Rest in peace, Sergeant. Your bravery and sacrifice will never be forgotten. 🦅🇺🇸
