The crops got a good steady soaking!

Rainfall lasted through most of the day on Sunday, with areas across eastern Iowa, northwest Illinois, and northeast Missouri receiving widespread rainfall of 1-2+ inches. An area of higher rainfall was concentrated along and south of the Interstate 80 corridor, where many reports documented 2-2.5 inches of rain.

We had tornadoes in Warsaw and Monmouth on Wednesday, and I believe there were on severe-warned -- not tornado-warned -- storms.

This is an example of why we have those outdoor sirens, and why NWS would rather warn storms "just in case" rather than "too late". Storms can evolve quickly, especially in higher-end environments like we had on Wednesday. At the end of the day, the only real tools they have to see what's going on out here are:

1) One radar site that gives one scan every few minutes and misses low-level features because it's ~85 miles away (the curvature of the earth means that the radar beam can only see stuff above ~8,000 ft here)
2) Storm spotters getting out there and calling stuff in.

So they take their best guess and err on the side of caution, and probably saved some folks from serious injury on Wednesday.

Wednesday saw a potent round of morning storms across much of the area, with scattered storms redeveloping in the afternoon. Here's a quick summary of what we know from the event.

The NWS will survey damage in Warren County, IL (Monmouth area) on Thursday.

We have been getting a lot of questions about the weather sirens today, so here is another reminder!! Today this was activated because of the 70+mph winds that were predicted. This is not only a tornado warning, it is a severe weather warning telling you to get indoors. Once inside you should tune into a trusted weather source! Hope this helps with some of your questions!! 😊

The bowing, "punching" part of the storm missed us just to the NE. Burlington reported wind gusts of 50-60 mph. Wonder what it was like over in Dallas City.
