The Avery's rooftop lounge hummed with the kind of effortless wealth that never needed to announce itself. Crystal glassware caught the city lights. Low music drifted over marble countertops. And Chloe Lin moved through it all in a stained canvas apron, hauling a tub of dirty glasses toward the service station.
She was seventeen, a senior at Oakridge Prep, and tonight she was invisible.
That was the deal. Work-study scholarship integration meant Friday nights on her feet, enduring the casual cruelty of people who had never cleared a table in their lives. She had learned to keep her face neutral and her posture straight. Both were armor.
Harper Vance held court in the central VIP booth like a queen receiving tribute.
She was beautiful in the specific, engineered way that money produces — perfect highlights, a blazer that probably cost more than Chloe's monthly food budget, a laugh calibrated to carry exactly far enough. Her clique surrounded her in a tight semicircle, nodding along as she narrated her upcoming spring break trip to Ibiza in exhausting detail.
Chloe stepped up to clear the booth's empties.
"Hey, charity case." Harper raised her voice just enough to pull the surrounding tables into the moment. She pointed one manicured nail at a faint ring of condensation on the dark wood. "This table is disgusting. Wipe it down. I don't pay tuition to sit in a swamp."
Chloe picked up the stack of plates without breaking stride. "If you need further service, Harper, you can page the dedicated floor server. I'm clearing glassware."
The laughter at the table died instantly. Several Oakridge students froze with forks suspended mid-air. Nobody used Harper Vance's first name without a tone of absolute deference — certainly not a girl wearing a stained apron.
Harper's eyes went cold and sharp in the space of a single breath.
She reached across the table, grabbed a full glass of thick pomegranate juice, and flung it directly into Chloe's face.....
