🌠 July 17, 2025 – The Perseid Meteor Shower

The Perseid Meteor Shower, one of the most beautiful and active meteor showers of the year, will begin to show increased activity on July 17, 2025.

Start of visible activity: July 17 at ~21:00 UTC

Radiant (Perseus constellation) rises: ~22:30 UTC

Best viewing window: From 00:00 to 04:00 UTC on July 18

📌 Notes:

Even though the peak of the Perseids will occur around August 12–13, meteors will already be visible from July 17 onward, especially in darker skies.

You can expect to see 10–20 meteors per hour on the night of July 17 if you're in a dark, rural area with clear skies.

This little dot is Earth about 6 Billion kilometers away (3.7 billion miles) taken by Voyager 1, as it was leaving our solar system. So much life in that little Pale Blue Dot 🌎

Voyager distance: Now roughly 13.9 billion miles, or 22.3 billion kilometers. 🔭

Launched: Mon, 05 Sept 1977 12:56:00 UTC

From the early 20th century to today, our understanding of the universe has grown from something unimaginably small to overwhelmingly vast. In 1922, the "Known Universe" was thought to be limited almost entirely to our own Milky Way galaxy, estimated at about 100,000 light-years across.

Back then, astronomers had just begun to realize that the Milky Way was just one galaxy among many, thanks to pioneering work by Edwin Hubble. Fast forward to the present, and the “Known Universe” now refers to the observable universe, a staggering expanse approximately 93 billion light-years in diameter.

This enormous scale reflects the light we can detect from billions of galaxies, many of which are moving away from us due to the universe’s continuous expansion since the Big Bang. Advances in telescope technology, space exploration, and cosmological theory have unveiled a cosmos far grander than ever imagined, filled with billions of galaxies, stars, and planets. This journey from a single galaxy to an expansive multiverse underscores humanity’s relentless curiosity and evolving understanding of our place in the cosmos.

Using the James Webb Space Telescope, scientists led by Professor Nikku Madhusudhan spotted two chemicals—dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS)—in the atmosphere of the distant planet K2-18 b, 124 light years away. On Earth, these compounds mostly come from marine life.

K2-18 b orbits a red dwarf star in the Leo constellation and sits in its star’s habitable zone. It’s 2.6 times bigger and about nine times heavier than Earth, and researchers think it may have a deep ocean.

These new findings hint that K2-18 b’s atmosphere could support life, sparking excitement among scientists. But they caution that more data is needed before confirming if life really exists there.

This discovery offers a fascinating glimpse into the possibilities beyond our solar system—and a reminder of how much we still have to learn. 🌌🔭

A century ago, in 1922, the entire known universe was thought to be just 100,000 light-years across—about the size of our Milky Way.

Back then, astronomers believed our galaxy was the entire universe. They had no idea what lay beyond.
Then came the game-changer. Edwin Hubble’s discoveries in the 1920s revealed that the Milky Way was just one of countless galaxies, and the universe was expanding. Fast forward to today, and our cosmic map has exploded in size—the observable universe is now estimated to be 93 billion light-years across! 🤯

The universe didn’t physically expand that much in 100 years—we just finally realized how vast it already was. The discovery of cosmic expansion, dark energy, and the Big Bang theory completely changed our understanding. Light from galaxies billions of years away is still reaching us, showing us a universe that keeps getting bigger the more we look.

Think about this: The universe we know today is likely just a fraction of the whole thing. Beyond what we can see, space could stretch on infinitely.

A hundred years from now, how much bigger will our universe become?
