Come visit The Fool (and John) at the MCKC dog show!
I'm The Fool, and The Fool's Glass is a custom stained glass studio. I have a stock of ready-made suncatchers and window panels, and love making custom glass to your specifications.
For as long as I can remember, I've been creating something. Sand castles, drawings, pen & ink sketches, beaded bracelets, chainmaille... It took me a while to find my creative "home". My home is my studio, where I'm surrounded by specialized tools, personal protective equipment, and a giant red bucket labeled "First Aid" that's full of bandages and ointment. All pieces start, however, in my office. There I do an initial drawing or two, either on a sketch pad or the computer. Once the drawing is close to my vision (or the vision of my client) I will scan it into my specialized stained glass software where the lines can be adjusted, and through the marvels of technology - we can see glass samples in place in the drawing. When everyone who needs to be happy with the drawing and the glass choices, I prepare and print the pattern (traditionally called "the cartoon.") Sometime later the finished glass emerges, and has its first opportunity to shine in the sunlight - and then the glass is packed for its journey to its new home. I work on a "first come - first served" basis, with one exception. I will make an exception for a "memorial" piece, sliding it in line where I can fit it to expedite its completion. My work list (and your wait time) fluctuates throughout the year - but please don't wait too much beyond October 1 to place a Holiday order. My busiest season is August through mid-December! Any questions? Comments? Suggestions? drop a message into the system. Have a great day / week / month / year... LIFE! ------------------------------------------------------------ Oh! to answer a frequently asked question... "HOW DO I ORDER ONE??!!" First, thanks for liking my work well enough that you'd like to have one come to your house. The way it works: • Send an email to [email protected], or message me privately (Diane McHutchison) or send one through The Fool's Glass. • If you know then what sort of thing you'd like, let me know. That's not really important at that point, though. Things like size, your budget, colors - those are all good for me to know. • I'll respond - usually within 24 hours, and we'll "talk" about design, size, colors. If I'm doing something custom, I'll ask for photo(s) of the subject. • I'll wander away for a while and work on some drawings. Once I have something that looks ok to me, I'll email a .jpg of the drawing to you for approval or adjusting. • Once the design is approved, your piece will go into my work queue. (Right now, it's about a 4 week delay until I'd be able to start something.) • If there's something I'm not sure of, I'll send emails and/or photos. Sometimes I send pictures of glass. My ultimate goal is to make sure that you're getting what you want. Finally, I'll send a photo of the finished piece. If you use paypal, I'll send you an invoice. If you don't, we'll work out other payment details at the time. If you're local (between Baltimore MD and Albany NY... more or less), we'll arrange a place to meet, otherwise, I'll box your glass and ship it. That's the general process in a nutshell.
Come visit The Fool (and John) at the MCKC dog show!
Thanks to everyone who stopped by at the wheaten boutique last evening. It was fantastic seeing friends and meeting new
Stop by and see what The Fool is doing with these tiny lanterns!
I love these little lanterns!
The truck is unloaded, and set up starts in an hour.
New! Clocks & music boxes
Come see us at the Wheaten Boutique tonight.... stay tuned for a few photos!
The Fool is finally feeling "normal" (whatever that means.)
The Fool hasn't fallen into a well. I've been extremely busy with the day job....and not in the studio nearly enough. Couple that with that "off" feeling that accompanies extremely sad news from a number of friends who have experienced losses in the past month or so...not much has come out of the studio lately. That will change, as I've nearly wrapped up one project, and things should settle down a bit.
Meanwhile, I finally got "Wheels on the Bus" installed in front of a window! I did this piece quite a few years ago, it's framed in copper, and the solder lines have all been copper player. And no, it's not for sale. But I'd gladly make another!
I think this is true whether the gift was handmade by the giver, or by someone else and purchased as the gift. I have enjoyed watching folks mull over the decision between two similar pieces of stained glass, and the look of satisfaction when "the perfect" one was chosen.
Give handmade! Receive handmade!
The Fool is officially finished for the holidays. Well, almost. I have a couple of family gifts to make, but the last of the holiday shipments go out today. Yay!
To all of our customers, past, present and future - I hope that this holiday season is filled with all of the things that build good memories. I also hope that those things that cause anxiety, stress, anger or frustration are absent from your lives through the holidays and well into 2018... and 2019... and ....
Stay warm, dry & safe. Don't drink and drive. Love on your pets. And we'll see you next year.
The Fool has been busy.
After the intensity of the past couple of months, I absolutely had to take some time to put some order and organization back into the studio. It's taken a while, but I'm almost finished! By this time tomorrow evening, the studio should be back in operation... complete with labels on all of the vats, boxes, baskets, and bins!
I spent last evening "experimenting." I have orders to work on, pieces to ship, and other tasks around the house.... but took last night to play. The end result is here. An 8" x 8" light box with an "enameled" copper mermaid swimming on the glass. I'm pleased with the result... as is the friend who saw her this afternoon and said "mine!" I've attached an assortment of photos....box lights on, box lights off, camera flash on, camera flash off.
And now for something completely different. I don't spend all of my time at my desk or in the studio. John and I are members of the Jersey Pinelands Curling club.... and so I'm happy to present a fundraising piece for the club. Feel free to submit your orders at any time - but don't expect to see your glass pieces until around Thanksgiving... I owe pieces to folks that have already ordered things.
Check out the details and download the order form from The Fool's Glass -- http://www.thefoolsglass.com/jersey-pinelands-curling-club-fundraiser
A while back, someone asked me when the thermal drink cups would be available again through my CafePress shop. I just checked.... they appear to be available!
Sitting Wheaten Acrylic Double-Wall Tumbler
All set up ...for today only... at the Allentown (NJ) Fall Festival. Come see us at our last show for 2017!
Again, I'd like to thank everyone who stopped by The Fool's Glass this past weekend. While the weather wasn't beautiful, the grounds were filled with lots of wonderful dogs and their people. Looking forward to seeing everyone again next year!
I have the glass cut for several more of the centerpieces from the SCWTCA dinner. They are $75 each, and the club will receive $25 from that amount. If you're interested, please let me know, and I'll work on finishing them and getting them shipped. (ONLY the stained glass piece... I don't have the treasure chests or puppies.)
All set up....y'all come!
Right now, I'm having to work pretty hard to convince myself that getting up at this hour is a good idea. Hope to see lots of friends-new and old- at the Montgomery All Terrier show today. We set the racks yesterday.... now to hang the glass. Y'all come and stop by...on the grounds of the Montgomery County Community College in Blue Bell, PA.
The racks are in place, and we plan to be at the booth ridiculously early tomorrow morning to finish setting up. A special prize to the first person who stops by tomorrow and mentions the gigantic blue box!
One last teaser.... this is one of 5 brand new items from The Fool this year! See y'all tomorrow!
And now for something completely different... a plethora of small ornaments. Christmas, Halloween, Angels, and more!
A busy day in the studio....and a bunch of treasures are now ready for cleaning and patina.
Today's sneak peak.... it's not just Wheatens anymore!! I may not have a lot of "other" terrier pieces with me, but I do have patterns for every breed.
Ok.... sneak peek #2..... a garden lantern.
I know that there are some of y'all who are wondering where the "sneak peeks" have been for this year's Wheaten Boutique at Montgomery. Well, between the day job, the kitchen remodel, and doing lots of work in the studio, I haven't had much time to take many photos.
But fear not! I've been working and planning, and cutting and soldering. I've enlisted help here and there, and the boxes of "don't forget this!!" are being assembled.. getting ready. It's ONLY ONE WEEK AWAY!!
So... the first "sneak peek" for 2017 isn't glass at all... but my roadmap for the boutique setup.
Getting ready for Montgomery! I've been chugging away down in the studio -- working on some new Wheaten designs, a Westie or two, some Wire Fox Terriers, Skyes, and Airedales, too. If you're headed to Montgomery in October, and you're definitely interested in seeing something specific, please let me know by September 1. I can't promise anything - but will see what I can do.
"Montgomery" is the Montgomery County Kennel Club - Terrier Show. If you love seeing beautiful dogs, if you're interested in adding a terrier to your family, if you'd like a nice day out - consider coming out for the day. The top terrier breeders will be there, along with a whole bunch of really great folks. I'll be there on Sunday in the vendor tents.
I feel as though I've been sort of "out of it".... and it's taking me a while to catch up. The kitchen's done, and I'm now back in the studio full time -- or at least as much time as the day job allows! Anyone want to guess what these will be?
It is a beautiful day in Long Branch.... Y'all come!
Good morning, everybody! It's a beautiful day... just perfect for a walk in the park. So come on down to Long Branch for the 19th annual "Art in the Park". Lots of great artists, sunshine and sea breezes. Start your summer with art! Hope to see you there.
OK.... I'll admit defeat. I've lost a few bits of critical information, and need to share some other bits. If you recognize yourself in the following, please PM me.
1. I know someone won a lantern in an auction, and has already told me what designs she wanted on the two sides. I neither remember the designs, nor the winner. Contact me please? MYSTERY SOLVED!!
2. I haven't shipped the flask yet... I still need to make the ornament to go with it. I hope that's ok. I know who you are, and we've "talked" this week.
3. I haven't forgotten the Van Gogh background. I've had a couple of new ideas, and I'll get some drawings to you shortly. (And, obviously, I know who you are, too.)
4. I've been experimenting on how to create the woodgrain effect for a particular project. I know it's taken "forever", but I haven't forgotten you, either. I'll be in touch to see if you're still interested, since this has dragged on for so long.
5. I sort of remember that someone asked me about a corgi stained glass something. If you did, could you please jog my memory?
6. Did I forget anyone from my list of "things I forgot" ?
I think this is one of my favorite pieces to date. We designed the glass art to coordinate with the front of the copper sink.
Don't like "plain" lanterns? Here are 2 that I finished yesterday, along with the painting that inspired them.
Y'all come....Pottery Barn... The Grove at Shrewsbury
Reminder y'all... I'll be at the Grove in Shrewsbury - Pottery Barn - tomorrow. Stop by and say "hi!"

Since Facebook won't let me put in a range for price, I picked "$$" to respond to someone's request that I include that information on the site. In reality, though, my prices fall in a very wide range from "$" to "$$$$$".
And here is the companion ornament....
And the same order form for this piece, as well: http://www.thefoolsglass.com/irish-soft-coated-wheaten-terrier-club
And we're off! I'm working like crazy to get a shipment of these special limited edition panels ready to ship to Ireland. This particular design will ONLY be available in 2017 and a portion of the purchase price will go to The Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of Ireland as a fundraiser.
I forgot to mention earlier- the order form can be found here: http://www.thefoolsglass.com/irish-soft-coated-wheaten-terrier-club
Anyone looking through the photos on this page could start to think that The Fool "only" does dogs.... We just delivered this piece on Saturday ... and left the recipient speechless!
To mark 80 years of Breed Recognition the Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of Ireland has commissioned these pieces.
Each piece will be handmade individually and will only be available during 2017. Each piece will be numbered and at the end of the year purchasers will be advised just how many were made of each piece. The sizes are 19cm x 28cm (11" x 7") for the rectangular one at a cost of $125. Approx 13cm x 13cm (5.5" x 5.5") for the harp at cost of $40 plus shipping.
The Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of Ireland will receive a portion of the purchase price of each piece to assist with their programs.
The order form can be found here: http://www.thefoolsglass.com/irish-soft-coated-wheaten-terrier-club
Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club
The orders have started to come in for the commemorative panel and ornament in honor of the Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of Ireland's 80th anniversary. Just a reminder - these pieces will ONLY be available during calendar year 2017!
The Fool's Glass is pleased to announce a very special stained glass panel and companion ornament. To celebrate and commemorate the 80th Anniversary of the Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of Ireland, I was asked to design and make available these pieces.
They will be available for order ONLY through December 31, 2017.
Each panel will have a tag indicating its place within the edition, and the piece number will be painted onto the ornaments. At the end of the year, when the edition closes, all of the owners of record will be notified of the final edition count for each. Additionally, all of the ornaments and panels will come with an accompanying Certificate of Authenticity.
A portion of the proceeds from both the ornament and the panel will benefit the Irish Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Club of Ireland - so not only are you getting a special commemorative piece for your home -- the Club will be getting some extra funds for their projects.
The pictures posted below are of the prototypes. The panel does not show the dates - 1937 and 2017 - painted into the "sky". Those dates will be present in the final pieces, as shown in the pattern drawing that I've also attached.
Unfortunately, I cannot attach a document to this post so I've built a special page here: http://www.thefoolsglass.com/irish-soft-coated-wheaten-terrier-club - so that anyone, anywhere can celebrate this anniversary and have one (or more!) of these special pieces.

I maintain a stock of some completed stained glass pieces, while most of my glass is custom. For that reason, the prices range from around $30 (for a stock ornament) to $$$$ for a large custom installation. Please call for an appointment if you really want to see the studio.
