Augusta was the place this morning for a large group of athletes and supporters from the 8,000+ strong #letthemplay #maine Facebook group asking to be heard. They came from many different communities representing many different sports and seasons all sharing the same message, “Let Us Play!” MSNM was able to speak with Ezra Michaud, a junior multi-sport athlete at Messalonskee High School. He shared with us that he and his teammates “are willing to take the precautions necessary to be safe and feel that playing is important.”
Off camera we spoke with today’s event organizer, Amy Bourget a parent of a Winslow High School athlete, and her message was simple, “I think we all want the same thing and that's for our kids to be able to play the sports they love. My goal for this rally is to just get as many of these student athletes together safely and let there voices be heard and there school colors be seen. I want all the powers that be to see how much these kids want and need this.” We asked what is your message to the athletes and families and she was proud to say, “I would just say stay strong. We're all in this together. To the seniors, my heart breaks for you.” When asked what she thought about the pending Maine Principals Association vote on Thursday, she was forthright is responding, “the MPA is and making a decision, I know they're trying to make the right decision and taking all things into account. But these kids have been playing all summer with no issues. They will play one way or another. Private leagues will be formed and become more popular. I would think the MPA would rather have them play for the school under stricter guidelines, then to know they will be playing elsewhere with less guidelines.”
One thing that was clear today, by Amy and everyone on the ground, was they just WANT TO PLAY!
