This family portrait was taken around 1900 in Henning, Tennessee.
It shows Jim Turner, a white man from an affluent Southern family, and his wife Carrie—a Black schoolteacher.
In a time when in*******al marriage faced scorn and danger, they stood together.
They didn’t hide.
They raised a family.
Their sons—George, William, and Hardin—grew up proud of both sides of their heritage.
Hardin would later become a doctor.
This wasn’t just a portrait.
It was a quiet act of revolution.
At the turn of the 20th century, in the Jim Crow South, families like the Turners faced isolation, suspicion—even threats.
But they chose love.
They chose dignity.
And they taught their children to walk tall in a world that told them to shrink.
Their story reminds us that history isn’t just written in laws or wars.
It’s written in choices—quiet, powerful, everyday choices to love and endure.
This is what courage looks like.
This is what legacy looks like.

We’re heartbroken to share the passing of Malcolm-Jamal Warner at 54. The beloved actor, known for his iconic role as Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, passed away while on a family vacation in Costa Rica, tragically drowning while swimming. His decades-long career included standout roles in Malcolm & Eddie, Reed Between the Lines, and The Resident, as well as a Grammy win for his work in spoken word and music. A true multi-hyphenate actor, director, poet, and musician, he brought depth and power to everything he touched across generations. Rest in power, Malcolm.
