Welp got a call the other day from on of my good buddies Jakob. He had stated that cooper had shot a buck that they had 6.5 years of history with and was having trouble locating him. They had tracked blood around 400 yards and found three beds, once they found the third bed they backed out and gave me a call. Jacob and I got a plan together for the next day to track around 11.

We arrive and walk back to the shot location and go over the shot again trying to get a better idea of where the shot actually hit. After talking for a minute or so we put jewel in the track and it was game on. After about a minute we get to the first bed that was about 150 yards into the track and jewel is flying. 3 minutes after that we are on the second bed about 250 yards in. A minute or so after we are standing in the third bed and we stop to take a little break and let everyone catch up. This is where things start to get really interesting, out of this blood goes in two different directions jewel makes a hard 90s to the left and about 40 yards past that she 90s to the right and takes us straight up the hill. I’m giving jewel full rain of her 30ft lead and I look back to tell them I have blood where I’m at to meet me up there. This is when things start to get pretty crazy. Jewel disappeared into the tall brush and I’m following her. I hear her yelp and that’s when I saw why. Jewel was inside the bucks horns. The deer was still alive. I yell back at the hunters and they hurry up to where I’m at. I’m finally able to get jewel off the buck when they make it to me. The hunters were able to dispatch the buck and the sigh of relief.

Congratulations cooper on your very first buck I’m glad you guys called me, it was definitely a track I will never forget. So I apologize for the wait on these I’ve been super busy with work and other tracks.

So the other day I got a call from dad saying bub I just shot a big one and I don’t know where I hit. He had stated the buck was quartering to him hard and the buck had spotted him in the tree. So he decided to take the shot. When he shot he had caught a limb from a tree and caused his arrow to strike the buck in a undesirable location. I told him not to worry and I would bring Jewel out and she would tell us the story.

After I hung up I asked my buddy Brandon if he cared to come give me a hand. The location my Dad was in was very steep country and was going to be a pain to get out of the woods if we did happen to find him. Of course he agreed and we went to get Jewel to go track this deer.

We arrived at the shot location and where my dad was running me through what happened. After going over what happened we decided we would put Jewel down and if we advanced past 250 yards we would back out and run it in the morning for just incase reasons. Jewel absolutely hammered this track, we went about 200 yards straight over the hill to find his buck had expired with the arrow still in him. He was like a kid on Christmas Day.

We spent more time dragging this beautiful West Virginia 8 point out of the woods then we did tracking it. When in doubt back out and that’s exactly what happened here. We got a plan together and executed it. Congratulations old man on this dandy I’m glad to see you this excited. That’s another hunger night for the coyotes and tag punched.

Couple proof of life’s from the other day of tracking. First one is high and back the other was low and hit front left leg. Not every track results in a recovery but we know we did our jobs when we receive these messages after. Next up on the list is Ethan Groves
So Ethan had called me the other night stating that he shot a really nice buck and didn’t like how the deer reacted. We go through our normal conversation asking how far the shot was, what kind of broadhead, how did the deer react, so on and so forth. We both were in agreement that he had made a lethal shot.
I told Ethan that I had one track to run in the morning before I got to him which he was understanding. They had decided they were going to look a little more in the morning while I was running my first track. They were able to advance the blood a little further and they found a bed with some white foam and blood in it.
We arrived on scene at 1:15 and we took Jewel to the impact site. After a few minutes Jewel gets lined out and she’s off to the races. We quickly advance to the hunters last blood. We take a small break at the bed to let Jewel and ourselves get a drink because this is some of the thickest stuff we have ever tracked through. After a few minutes we get started again, and we are right back on it. Jewel takes us down to a creek crossing and takes us out it for a bit when I notice she’s not really tracking anymore. So we take her back to the bed and restart. She takes us on the same line as before and nothing. So at this point I’m starting to wonder what we are missing. I can tell Ethan is getting nervous that we might not find his deer. So we discuss on basically making a 100 yard circle with jewel to see if I can get her to hit on something. We start our circle and we happen to get back that same bed that we have started from twice already. Well wouldn’t you know the third time is the charm. We get back to the same creek crossing as before and this time Jewel takes us across and starts heading back to where the hunter had shot his deer. Ethan is a little ways off from me but I continue to let Jewel work and she starts doing the classic bird dog stance like she always does when we get close. She takes us on a straight path right to this beautiful Ohio 8 point. So at this point Ethan has know idea I’m standing next to his deer I gave him a call and said do you want the good news or bad news. He says what’s the bad news. I said this deer is going to be a pain to get out of the woods. From that point all the sadness was turned into happiness. We will continue to starve the coyotes and put deer on tailgates.

So we get asked all the time if we track doe’s? Absolutely we do! We track anything our sole purpose is to get tags punched and make the hunter happy. We also like starving the coyotes! Any way I got a call the other night from my father saying he shot a doe and he hit it a little far back. I advised that he should back out and let jewel do her magic this evening.

We took the track up around 9pm that night and as soon as jewel took off I just knew we was going to find it. She took us on a nice short 200 yard track to find the doe had expired in her first bed. These gut shots just take time. It’s not something you can rush. These mistakes happen to everyone eventually and it’s always nice to know someone when it does.
