A pre-participation physical is an important part of keeping young athletes safe, but it’s only one snapshot of their health.

Having a pediatrician or primary care physician who knows the athlete and understands their health history can provide more consistent, ongoing care throughout the sports season.

It’s also important to think beyond injury rehabilitation. Cross-training can help athletes stay in shape, build strength, optimize their bodies, and prepare for the demands of their sport.

Keeping athletes healthy means looking at the bigger picture—not just whether they're cleared to play.

When it comes to heat illness, knowing the warning signs can make a critical difference. Excessive cramping, whole-body cramps, and especially stopping sweating can be signs that an athlete needs immediate medical attention.

If an athlete is showing serious symptoms, don't wait. Call 911 and begin cooling the athlete right away. The priority is to lower their core body temperature as quickly as possible.

For parents, coaches, and athletes, understanding these warning signs and knowing when to act can help prevent a serious situation from becoming even more dangerous.

When it comes to hydration, drinking a large amount of water or an electrolyte drink right before practice isn't a substitute for staying hydrated throughout the day.

Young athletes can go through long periods without drinking, then try to make up for it by quickly chugging a large amount before practice. But hydration doesn't work that way. Just like a kitchen sponge, the body needs time to absorb fluids.

Encouraging kids to drink consistently throughout the day can help them stay better prepared for practices, games, and long days in the heat.

With the heat right now, nutrition and hydration need to be a priority, especially for young athletes heading into practice after a long school day.

Skipping lunch, rushing out of school, and going hours without eating or drinking can leave athletes unprepared for intense practices, especially when they're spending several hours outside in the heat.

Before practice starts, make sure your athlete has had enough food and fluids throughout the day. Proper preparation can help support performance, recovery, and most importantly, safety.

Perspective 🤌🏼
Yesterday’s I had the opportunity to see the game from a different viewpoint 🏟️. First time seeing MS Veterans Memorial Stadium from the visitors sideline at night. Jackson State Athletics 🐅has the largest fan base in FCS, facilities and infrastructure. Sometimes it’s taken for granted until you see the stark contrast.

How do we level the playing field in HBCU sports?🧐
Athletes should not be required to compete without support. ✊🏾

Thanks 🙌🏽 Dr Mcleod mpbonline for the invitation to discuss 🎙️ all things Sportsmedicine. It’s a busy time of the year for athletes. Our job is not only to treat but also to educate about prevention.

Week 0: On the road w Jackson State Football in

Football 🏈 season requires way more than the typical 9-5 days. Part of the sacrifice is late nights, watching kids games on GAMECHANGER and frequent travel. On the flip side, always having the best seat in stadium 🏟️, working as a team to achieve a common goal and taking care for incredible people.

I’m looking forward to a long weekend and a home game in MS Veterans Memorial Stadium this weekend. Nashville, it was real ✌🏽🤠

When it comes to health, recovery, and wellness treatments, not everything you see or hear is backed by reliable information.

With so much misinformation out there, it's important to do your due diligence, use trusted sources, and take the time to verify what you're putting into or doing for your body.

Just because something is popular doesn't mean it's effective or right for you. Make informed decisions and make sure you're using something that is actually supported by credible information.
