Que Pasa Fest announces its Guillermo De Bango Excellence in the Arts Award recipients for 2025 are Jose Antonio and Vivian Nieto. They will be honored on Tuesday, October 7, at 8pm at Rock n Bowl in New Orleans. That evening there will be live music and DJ, a rundown of the musical acts and activities that will take place at Que Pasa Fest and more. The event is open to the public with a cover charge of $10.

For over three decades, José Antonio Nieto and Vivian Nieto have been more than just restaurateurs — they have been steadfast champions of Latino and Hispanic culture in the New Orleans area. This year, their tireless dedication is being recognized with the prestigious Guillermo De Bango Excellence in the Arts Award, honoring their restaurant, Churros Café, and their unwavering support for countless organizations and events that celebrate the community’s heritage.

Founded in 1993 at its original location on Kingman Street in Metairie, Churros Café has become a beloved institution known as the home of the Spanish beignet. What began as José Antonio’s childhood dream — inspired by the street vendors of his Cuban hometown — grew into a local treasure that serves up authentic Cuban and Spanish cuisine while weaving a rich cultural legacy into the fabric of the region.

José Antonio brought his vision to life with determination, faith, and the help of close friends, even creating a custom-built churro machine that remains in use to this day. His wife, Vivian, is the heart of the kitchen, ensuring every plate tells a story of heritage and tradition, from the tender Ropa Vieja to the iconic, sugar-dusted churros paired with Cuban coffee.

But their influence extends far beyond the walls of their restaurant. For decades, the Nietos have supported local Latino and Hispanic organizations, festivals, and cultural initiatives, often stepping in quietly to lend a helping hand or provide resources to uplift others. Their commitment has strengthened community connections, nurtured cultural pride, and helped countless events thrive.

The Guillermo De Bango Excellence in the Arts Award recognizes not only their culinary achievements but also their enduring contributions to the cultural arts landscape of the region. Through Churros Café and their decades of generosity, José Antonio and Vivian Nieto have shown that food can be a bridge — connecting people, preserving heritage, and creating spaces where tradition lives on.

As the community celebrates this well-deserved honor, Churros Café remains more than a restaurant: it is a living testament to the power of passion, culture, and giving back.

Que Pasa Fest announces the Oscar Marcia Music Award recipient for 2025 is Roberto "Chobeto" Moreira. He will be honored on Tuesday, October 7, at 8pm at Rock n Bowl in New Orleans. That evening there will be live music and DJ, a rundown of the musical acts and activities that will take place at Que Pasa Fest and more. The event is open to the public with a cover charge of $10.

Moreira’s remarkable journey from his roots in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, to becoming a celebrated musician and cultural icon in New Orleans spans more than five decades. Known simply as Chobeto to his fans, he is an accomplished musician, producer, singer, and songwriter whose artistry has enriched the city’s diverse musical landscape.

Born in 1957, Chobeto arrived in New Orleans in 1973, where he began performing with Latin bands such as Los Sagitarios, Los Catrachos Boys de New Orleans, Los Monarcas, P**y Saavedra, Los Hermanos Herrera de Guatemala, and Fiebre. His vibrant rhythms and dynamic stage presence brought the sounds of Latin music to the heart of the Crescent City.

In 1976, Chobeto expanded his musical horizons in New York, performing with various bands and orchestras, including the acclaimed El Sonido 75, a multicultural ensemble featuring musicians from Honduras, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and New York’s Italian music scene.

Upon returning to New Orleans in 1979, Chobeto became an integral part of the French Quarter’s vibrant music culture. In 1984, he joined the legendary Chris Owens Nightclub as music director—a position he continues to hold with great pride. His ongoing performances across the city reflect a lifelong commitment to sharing Latin and international music with diverse audiences.

The Oscar Marcia Music Award, named in honor of the late Oscar Marcia—a Honduran native and influential figure in New Orleans’ Latin music scene—recognizes musicians who embody dedication, passion, and cultural impact. Marcia, as owner and musical director of Los Sagitarios, nurtured and guided countless emerging artists, leaving an indelible mark on the community.

Previous honorees include Julio & Cesar, P**y Saavedra, Alberto Chinchilla Sr., Jose “Pepe” Vazquez, Eduardo Rey, and Javier Gutierrez.
