A pattern I am exploring as a man:

Underneath the need to fight, protect, rescue, prove, confront, or demand accountability, there is often something much quieter.

Grief.

Anger says: You wronged me. I’ll fight.

Grief says: I cared. I wanted you to show up. And you didn’t.

The breakthrough isn’t necessarily becoming a better warrior.

It may be learning that strength doesn’t always require a battle.

A man can love without chasing.
Forgive without trusting again.
Help without rescuing.
Walk away without hating.
And heal without requiring another person to finally understand what they did.

Sometimes putting down the sword isn’t surrender.

It’s finally allowing myself to feel the hurt and grief that anger has been protecting me from.

Feeling it doesn’t make them right. It doesn’t make me wrong.

It’s simply being with the honesty that lives beneath the armor and defenses.

It requires the man to show up in a new and different way.

One of the strangest things I learned from 20 years moving through different worlds is that spirituality can be one of the easiest places to perform character without actually developing it.

I've spent significant time in business, entertainment, sex-positive and spiritual communities.

Each had its codes, and consequences.

Lack professionalism in business and people stop working with you.

Don't show up and deliver in entertainment and nobody wants you on their stage.

Violate consent, discretion or trust in sexually liberated spaces and people stop inviting you in.

But spiritual communities were different.

You could learn the language, attend the ceremonies, make the gestures, speak about love, consciousness and healing, and become very good at appearing spiritual.

Sometimes the performance even increased your status.

But none of it necessarily demonstrated character.

Because character is revealed when your spirituality becomes inconvenient.

How do you behave when someone tells you no?
When money is involved?
When your reputation is threatened?
When keeping your word costs you something?
When nobody is watching?

Your spirituality isn't revealed by what you practice.
It's revealed by who your practices have made you.

The older I get, the less interested I am in performance.

I want congruence between what I say, what I believe and how I live.

That pursuit sits at the heart of Breakthrough.

Stop performing the values you want people to associate with you.

Pay the price required to become them.

A distracted man is an ineffective man.

He cannot focus.
He cannot produce consistently.
He cannot be led.
And eventually, he cannot lead.

Distraction kills discipline.
It fractures attention, weakens resolve, and destroys impact.

A distracted man can talk.
He can plan.
He can desire.
He can make promises.

But over time, he cannot be relied upon to produce.

Get your head straight.

Cut the fat.
Make the difficult decisions.
Choose a direction.
Cultivate focus.
Build discipline.
Commit to the mission.
