Disney was having issues with the resort we booked so they sent us to the Polynesian Tower. We had no clue what the room was going to be like. Turns out it was a theme park view! Watching the fireworks on the balcony was a new and magical Disney experience for us!

One of my best friends in high school wrote a book!

I am so excited to read it. DeAnna is one of the sweetest people I know, someone who loves big and … I remember her always loving English in school and reading tons of books. She’s definitely suggested several to me over the years! Now, she’s about to publish her first book, Golden Hour. I am so proud of her! This is such a major accomplishment.

Golden Hour will feature Bellamy and Edison and according to the author, “Golden Hour is a cozy small-town romance about found family, taking chances, and learning that sometimes love stays.”

She had a little giveaway on her page, DKFWrites, and I won! Look at the cute goodies I received. She even included something for my daughter, who had just made her First Communion.

Follow her at DKFWrites on facebook, instagram, tiktok, threads, and at dkfwrites.com.

💜 Preeclampsia and Postpartum Recovery: The Journey of Nola Nerd Baby

Our journey to parenthood didn’t end at delivery.
In many ways, it was just beginning.

After months of complications, high blood pressure, and uncertainty, I was induced early due to preeclampsia — a condition that can be life‑threatening for both mother and baby. Labor was intense. Recovery was harder than I ever imagined.

Our daughter was born healthy on February 22, 2018 — and she made every struggle worth it.

But just days later, I was back in the hospital with dangerously high blood pressure, facing magnesium drips, ER visits, and the terrifying possibility of seizures or stroke. The hardest part? Being separated from my five‑day‑old baby.

In this post, I share:

✨ The reality of labor with preeclampsia
✨ What postpartum complications looked like for me
✨ The emotional toll of recovery
✨ The incredible nurses and family support that carried us through
✨ What I wish more women knew about postpartum blood pressure

Preeclampsia doesn’t always end at delivery.
Postpartum recovery can be complicated.
And advocating for your health matters.

If you or someone you love is navigating pregnancy complications, I hope our story offers honesty, awareness, and hope.

👁️ My MOHS Eyelid Surgery and Recovery: A Best‑Case Scenario

Hearing the words “squamous cell carcinoma” is something you never forget — especially when it’s on your eyelid.

When I was diagnosed with skin cancer on my upper left eyelid, I expected the worst: pain, swelling, and a long recovery. Instead, thanks to early detection, an incredible medical team, and MOHS surgery, my experience turned out to be a best‑case scenario.

In this post, I share:

✅ What the waiting period felt like
✅ How MOHS surgery actually works (and why it’s so precise)
✅ What eyelid reconstruction involves
✅ A realistic day‑by‑day recovery timeline
✅ How this diagnosis changed my daily habits

This isn’t medical advice — just one patient’s honest experience from diagnosis to healing.

If you or someone you love is facing MOHS surgery — especially on the eyelid — I hope this brings clarity, reassurance, and maybe a little peace of mind.

Early detection matters. Sunscreen matters. Paying attention to your body matters.

📸 Learning Photography in New Orleans: A Nerdy Family’s Journey

What happens when two nerdy educators decide to level up from iPhones and a point‑and‑shoot camera?

You grab a Nikon D5300… and start learning photography in one of the most photogenic cities in the world — New Orleans. ⚜️

From the colorful murals of the Bywater to the moss‑draped oaks of City Park, we’ve been practicing shutter speed, aperture, ISO… and embracing plenty of mistakes along the way.

Because here’s the truth:
Buying a camera doesn’t make you a photographer.
Practice does.

Along the way we’ve learned:
✨ Start with Auto — it’s okay!
✨ Experiment with lighting (New Orleans gives you plenty of it)
✨ Mistakes are part of the process
✨ Happy accidents sometimes become your favorite shots

Whether you’re photographing comic cons, family adventures, or just your own backyard, you can learn this skill — one click at a time.

If we can do it, you can too. The link is in the comments!

⚜️ Famous Graves in Metairie Cemetery: Notable People of New Orleans

Did you know one of the most fascinating historic sites in New Orleans used to be a horse racing track? 🏇

Today, Metairie Cemetery is a 65‑acre outdoor museum filled with stunning above‑ground tombs, elaborate monuments, and the final resting places of some of the most influential figures in Louisiana history.

On a recent family visit, we explored the graves of:

🎺 Louis Prima
📚 Anne Rice
🏈 Tom Benson
🍗 Al Copeland
📖 P.B.S. Pinchback
⚓ Andrew Higgins
🇺🇸 William C.C. Claiborne

From jazz legends and bestselling authors to civil rights pioneers and WWII innovators, these stories bring New Orleans history to life in a powerful way.

Cemeteries may seem quiet, but here in Louisiana, they are full of art, architecture, culture, and unforgettable stories.

If you love:
✨ New Orleans history
✨ Unique architecture
✨ Learning through travel
✨ Exploring meaningful local sites with your family

Years after reading The Thanatos Syndrome in a college Honors seminar, I found myself standing beside Walker Percy’s simple grave at St. Joseph Abbey on the Northshore.

What started as a classroom discussion about faith, identity, and even genetic engineering somehow turned into a full‑circle family adventure through Covington — visiting his grave, historical markers, and even two beautiful bronze statues (including one with his Corgi, Sweet Thing 🐶).

From peaceful abbey grounds to Bogue Falaya Park and the Madisonville Library, this literary day trip reminded me how deeply place and story intertwine here in Louisiana.

If you love:
✨ Southern literature
✨ Louisiana history
✨ Meaningful family adventures
✨ The Moviegoer, Lancelot, or The Thanatos Syndrome

…this one’s for you.

Come walk the Northshore with us and trace the footsteps of one of the South’s most important writers.

Visiting in-laws in PCB doesn’t mean I forgot new year, new me. It means I don’t feel guilty about eating a couple of slices of the king cake that we brought with us. 🤣
