Recently, I broke down the Bad Bunny/Super Bowl controversy, which I think reflected the way MAGA supporters thought that by electing Trump, they had won the culture wars. They were surprised and upset to learn that a young Spanish-language artist whose songs they'd never would play the Super Bowl. (I'll link to that in the comments).

A Change.org campaign now has more than 100,000 signatures calling on the NFL to get George Strait out of semi-retirement to replace Bad Bunny. The choice is better than Lee Greenwood or Kid Rock, but it tells you what you need to know about MAGA. If it doesn't make them happy and comfortable, it's wrong.

Recently, Anuraag Pendyal sent me his new album, "Oh My Great Green God," and though I have to admit I didn't get it right away, there was enough going on that I wanted to know more.

We swapped email over it, and I'm still engaged and a little in the dark. Some choices don't work for me the way I'm sure he intends, but I love seeing artists make bold, personal choices & want to see what comes next. Link in the comments.

On Sunday, Matt Maltese will play the House of Blues New Orleans, and I’d love to see how his act works like. I keep thinking of Morrissey, though Maltese isn’t that radical an artist.

Like Morrissey, he commits to a hard stance to own - the swooning romantic in Maltese’s case - then throws in lines that should subvert it but don’t (I think).

I’m sorry I can’t make the show because I want to see how it plays live and what audiences do with it. I’ve been listening to him all weekend.

Concert films regularly flit through theaters for short runs - often a day, maybe a weekend - so much so that it's worth keeping your eye on the listings of theaters with 20 or so screens. All the major K-pop artists run concert films as events, and a week ago we missed the Twice film simply because we didn't know it was happening.

It's not just K-pop, though. Yesterday I received a press release for the upcoming Cure concert movie. Do I need to see Robert Smith on a movie screen at this point? Mmmmmmaybe, but individual mileage varies.

The New Orleans Film Festival starts on Thursday, and it has an interesting slate of feature-length and short music documentaries. The biggest tells the story of Paul McCartney's move from The Beatles to Wings, but it will also be on Amazon eventually, so you can gauge how to budget your time. Me, I'm more interested in a woman trying to get a handle on Lucinda's music to try to find a way into her own, and Jonathan McHugh's bio of Ray Conniff, a name we know from Christmas albums (if we know it at all). I want to know how he became an easy listening icon.
