Comedian Hannibal Buress will shoot a stand-up special at the Civic in October, and he's doing a warm-up show on Saturday at The Howlin Wolf New Orleans. The show's free, but you have to register for a ticket drawing. Recipients will be alerted after 6 pm tonight (Friday) so if you want to see the show, register now.

That's not a promising seating chart for Ye's Superdome show. It's frankly better than I expected, but that's a lot of deep blue for a show that's nine days away. And if anybody knows who's the producer of the show, let me know. I'm really curious who thought a stadium tour with him could work in 2026.

NOTE: In the Show My Ass department, I've looked at other stops on the tour and he's selling out stadiums - just not ours. I figured he's not as toxic as a lot of people would like to think, but he's far less so than I expected.

The podcast is back for another season - I think the ninth, but I should look that up - and this episode I dive into versions of "Christmas (Baby Please Don't Go)." I think I'm going to do a few of these this years since I love hearing people find interesting ways into well-known material, and I've been working on some theories about covers. A few here are pretty cool.

For my wrestling friends, the Wrestling News Now account on FB is posting straight up AI lies - yesterday a photo of New Day, Black and Vega wearing TNA t-shirts and saying they've signed (they haven't) and today they posted a photo of Mercedes in a WWE t-shirt with HHH signing a new WWE contract and leaving AEW (which didn't happen and couldn't since she's under contract). Don't fall for their obvious BS.

I'm back from vacation, and here are my highlights for the week in front of us. A lot of them are tied to Essence, which is a really cool event despite being poorly produced. Tisha Campbell Martin will do two sets of stand-up tonight at The Howlin Wolf New Orleans including a happy hour set. I also have notes on Kevin Gates, Sparta, and Valerie Sassyfras, who'll have her birthday bash tonight at Gasa Gasa.

A month ago, I wrote about the need for Essence Festival to re-think its music festival, and now less than a week from opening night, ticket sales are really rough. I just looked at each night on Ticketmaster and there are still a lot of seats available. Some sections right in front of the stage still have more than 100 tickets available. If anyone's sitting in the upper rack, it's because they want to sit there because there's plenty of room below them.

It's really disappointing because I've had so many good experiences at Essence and think it's an important part of New Orleans' cultural landscape. But the current production team needs to do some soul searching because New Orleans can't buy up all these tickets at the last minute, and people aren't suddenly whipping together a trip to come to town because there are still tickets available.

The Essence Festival of Culture is starting to renegotiate its contract with New Orleans and its venues. The festival would benefit from moving out of the Superdome and into the Smoothie King Center.
