THESE INCREDIBLE FEATHERED SOULS ARE NOT ONLY DEVOTED PARTNERS, THEY ARE HIGHLY INTELLIGENT & COMPLEX BEINGS...so many do not know that pigeons, have tiny magnetic crystals in their beaks that work like biological compasses...so they can sense Earth’s magnetic field and can use it to navigate thousands of miles, as well as as being able to detect sounds too low for humans to hear and read polarized light patterns in the sky...scientists have found they can count, recognize themselves in mirrors, learn abstract concepts, and even understand probability...they actually are in the top ten of intelligent beings on this planet, and some studies show they perform better than young children on certain cognitive tests...humans see only three primary colors, pigeons see four, including ultraviolet light so they can see patterns on each other’s feathers that are completely invisible to us...and they produce a protein-rich “crop milk” in their throat to feed their babies, along with doves, flamingos, and emperor penguins...and these amazing birds can fly over 60 mph in sustained flight..they also form lifelong partnerships, but their “divorce rate” changes based on environmental stress, as it does for all species..pigeons use different types of calls for different purposes and they can recognize individual voices over long distances and have specific “words” for danger, territory, and courtship...and they helped humans during the war, one named Cher Ami lost on of her legs sending a message tied to her other leg, saving 194 soldiers...they need our help as they were once domesticated and then we abandoned them in the wild, once most were done with them...but they stuck around humans in cities as they are used to us, so feed them oats, bird seed and leave water out for them...PIGEONS ARE NOT "PESTS", THEY ARE THOUGHTFUL SOULS THAT SHOULD BE PROTECTED & LIKE ALL SENTIENT BEINGS, DESERVE OUR EMPATHY -- Animal Freedom Fighter

In the South, heartworm disease is a devastating reality for dogs without prevention—a slow, agonizing death sentence that breaks hearts and creates an impossible situation for shelters. At Mobile County PALS, we're watching amazing souls sit in kennels, passed over by potential families simply because they're heartworm positive. Last year, we tried adopting out heartworm positive dogs with the promise that families would bring them back for treatment. Heartbreakingly, many never returned, leaving these precious lives to suffer. That's why we've made a commitment: we will treat every heartworm positive dog BEFORE adoption, giving them the fresh start they deserve.

Thanks to a generous veterinarian who donated the medication, we have the medicine. What we desperately need now is funding for the veterinary labor costs—$600-$800 per dog for treatment that transforms a death sentence into a second chance at life.
