We tasted 35 different styles of Lambrusco today What is remarkable is the range and versatility of these wines. The commonality is freshness, high acidity, pleasant effervescence and low alcohol.

Summing it up: Lambrusco is an historic wine with contempory appeal- with freshness, vivacity and diversity in style and food pairings. Think: pizza, burgers, BBQ, Asian, Latin, Cajun, fried chicken.

We go to R&O's Restaurant in Bucktown by the lake for Sunday lunch- not brunch-and watch football on the big screen. Everything is good at this family-run dining spot.

What's on the plate:

Grilled tuna po-boy dressed on a toasted seeded pistolet. Four perfectly cooked to order pieces of Gulf tuna- 2 per sandwich half. Dressed with plenty of pickles. Melanie's had the other half for dinner. One of her fave po-boys.

Juicy, drippy roast beef po-boy with burnt ends. Dressed on a seeded pistolet.

Plus a plate of French fries.

All we needed is the Italian olive salad to share.

And the Saints won!

In Orvieto, Brothers Niccolò and Bernardo Barberani lead their namesake family winery established by their grandfather, Vittorio Barberani in 1961. The Barberani Winery is located in hills above Lake Corbara in the Orvieto Classico area of Umbria. There are 55 hectares under vine in addition to olive groves for producing oil. Barberani’s wines are produced from local varieties including Grechetto and Trebbiano Procanico (whites) and Sangiovese Grosso (reds).

The lake effect in this area creates morning fogs that mist over the vineyards. By afternoon, the sun warms them up. The unique aspect of this is the matriculation of this climatic impact is botrytis cinera, a.k.a. noble rot. The grapes shrivel, and the juice becomes more concentrate. The result is a pleasant, sweet wine locally known as muffa nobile.

We had the pleasure of visiting Barberani this past June during a tour of Orvieto. Niccolò and Bernardo Barberani represent the third generation overseeing the winery. They join us to discuss their family and their wines on The Connected Table Live Wednesday, October 8. 2 p.m. EST/ 8 p.m. Italy. Watch or listen W4CY Radio We will share the link to the permanent podcast below once we have it.
