Short legs, long body, enormous personality. People mix up dachshunds and corgis constantly, and they are not remotely the same dog. 🐾

The bodies come from different places. Both breeds carry a form of dwarfism, but the dachshund was shaped deliberately for going underground after badgers, with a deep keeled chest, a long ribcage and shovel paws that turn slightly outward. The Pembroke Welsh corgi was built to move cattle, nipping at heels and ducking under the kick, so it is stockier and more compact with a much shorter back relative to its frame. That difference shows up in the health records. Dachshunds top the charts for disc disease. Corgis have their own back and hip concerns, but nothing close to the same rate.

The temperaments diverge just as sharply. A corgi is a herding dog, which means biddable, busy, wanting a task and generally happy to work alongside you. A dachshund is a hunting dog bred to make her own decisions underground where no human could possibly tell her what to do, and four hundred years of that is why recall is a negotiation and why she will out stubborn you purely on principle.

Both shed relentlessly. 🐾 Both bark. Only one of them will burrow to the bottom of your bed and then act insulted when you find her.

Slick hardwood and tile are the quiet problem. A long backed dog scrambling for grip has to brace through her spine every time she takes off or lands, and she does it dozens of times a day in the same three spots. Runners down the hallway, a rug at the bottom of the stairs and a mat where she launches off the sofa change the mechanics more than anything else you can buy. Choose low pile with a non slip backing, and keep the fur trimmed between her paw pads so she is not skating on hair.

After that, think about heights. The aim is to remove the jump rather than the destination, so steps or a ramp at the sofa and the bed, used consistently from the very start, work far better than trying to teach an adult dog not to leap. Baby gates at the stairs matter too, because going down stairs loads a dachshund's spine considerably harder than going up.

None of it has to look like a hospital. 🏡 A good runner, two soft steps and a gate, and the whole house is hers without costing her anything.

In Germany the wire haired teckel is a registered hunting dog with its own testing system, and one of the main roles is tracking wounded game. A hunter who does not make a clean shot is often both legally and ethically obliged to find that animal, and the dog who does it is very frequently a dachshund on a long lead, following a cold blood trail through forest hours after the fact. Some of the trails they are tested on are more than twenty hours old.

Dachshunds turn up in conservation work too. Their size lets them get into places a larger dog simply cannot reach, and the nose is the same nose that made them useful underground four hundred years ago. In the United States some are trained and titled through tracking tests, and a handful work alongside biologists locating s**t and invasive species out in the field.

It puts the couch behaviour in a rather different light. 🌲 The dog barking at a delivery van is running software written for tracking badgers through the dark, and she has nowhere else to run it.

Itchy skin in this breed usually traces back to one of three things. Environmental allergies to pollen, dust mites or grass, which tend to be seasonal and hit the paws, belly, ears and armpits hardest. Food sensitivity, most often to a protein she has happily eaten for years rather than anything exotic. Or a secondary yeast and bacterial infection that moved into skin she had already broken open by scratching, which smells faintly musty and turns the skin thick and dark over time.

Dachshunds also get a couple of breed specific ones. Ear infections come easily because those long heavy flaps hold warmth and moisture against the canal. Colour dilution alopecia shows up in blue and isabella coated dogs as thinning hair and flaky itchy patches, and it is genetic rather than anything anyone caused. Constant paw licking and rust coloured stains on white fur are a classic allergy tell that owners often miss for months.

The good news is that this is very treatable once you know which one you are dealing with. 🐾 Skin scrapes, a diet trial run properly for eight to twelve weeks, and modern medications have made itchy dogs far more comfortable than they were even a decade ago.

If you go to a breeder, ask what health testing the parents have had. For this breed that means eye testing, and for miniature dachshunds a cord1 PRA DNA test, plus an honest conversation about backs in the line. Ask to meet the mother in the home where the puppies were raised, not in a car park or a hallway. A good breeder will interview you harder than you interview them, will keep the puppies until at least eight weeks, and will tell you plainly to bring the dog back to them at any point in her life rather than rehoming her anywhere else.

If you adopt, breed specific rescues are full of dachshunds who are wonderful and simply landed in the wrong household. Ask about back history, about how she manages stairs and jumping, and about what her days looked like before she arrived. Many rescues foster in real homes, which means somebody can tell you exactly how she behaves at three in the afternoon on a wet Tuesday.

There is no morally superior door here. 💛 There is only doing the homework, and refusing to hand money to anyone who will not answer a straight question.

If your dachshund photos never quite capture how magnificent she looks in person, the reason is almost always the same one. 📸 You are taking them from all the way up on your feet, shooting down at the top of her head.

Get down onto the floor instead, right to her eye level, and everything changes. Shoot from the side to show off that long, glorious body in full, and wait for soft light near a window in the early morning or late afternoon. A quick squeak of a favourite toy held close to the lens will lift both ears at the exact same second. 🐾

Focus on the eyes, let that wet little nose fall gently soft, and keep clicking. The keeper is very often the frame right after the treat lands, when the whole face lights up. 💛 I would love to know when you last slowed right down just to photograph yours.

Dachshunds sleep a lot, commonly fourteen to sixteen hours a day, and seniors push well past that without any guilt at all. The burrowing is not a habit they picked up from your soft furnishings either. They were bred to push into dark tight spaces after prey, and a duvet reads to a doxie exactly like a tunnel that happens to be warm. Give one a blanket and she will nose under it, turn twice and vanish, leaving a long suspicious ridge across your bed.

A few things are worth knowing. Always check under the covers before you sit down or roll over, because a buried dachshund is completely silent and heartbreakingly easy to land on. Give her a light throw rather than a heavy quilt so she can always get herself out. And if she is a serious burrower, a proper covered cave bed will often save your bedding and give her somewhere she genuinely prefers.

The snoring is included at no extra charge. 😴 So is waking up with a warm dog pressed into the exact curve behind your knees.

The physics are unkind. In a crash at thirty miles an hour, an unrestrained twelve pound dog carries something in the region of three hundred and sixty pounds of force. That is dangerous for her and dangerous for everyone else in the car. Add a breed with a spine that already needs protecting and the case for strapping her in becomes very easy to make.

The two good options are a crash tested harness clipped to the seat belt, or a hard sided crate secured in the boot or the footwell. A raised booster seat suits a dachshund particularly well, because it lifts her enough to see out, which cuts down on car sickness and whining, while still tethering her properly. Look for brands that publish independent crash test results rather than just the words travel safe printed on the box, because plenty of cheap harnesses have never been tested at all.

Beyond the safety kit, road trips with a doxie are mostly wonderful. 🚗 Stop every couple of hours, keep water within reach, never leave her in a parked car, and accept that she will supervise your driving the entire way.

The back ones come first, because they are what this breed is most likely to show. A sudden yelp when she is picked up or turns. A hunched arch to her spine. Trembling, panting, and a refusal to jump onto something she cleared yesterday without a second thought. Wobbling in the back legs, knuckling a paw over so she walks on the top of it, or dragging. Any loss of feeling in the hind legs is a genuine emergency, and the window for the best surgical outcomes is measured in hours, not days.

Then there are the ones that apply to any dog but hit a deep chested breed hard. A swollen tight belly with unproductive retching. Pale or white gums. Collapse. Breathing that looks like hard work while she is resting. Any of those and you call ahead and drive.

Save your emergency vet number in your phone under a name you can find while your hands are shaking. 🚗 Keep a soft flat carrier or a towel sling somewhere you can grab it, because a dog with a back injury needs to be moved flat and supported rather than scooped up. Knowing what to look for is most of the battle.

That enormous, room filling bark coming out of a dog roughly the size of a loaf of bread is not a glitch. 🐾 It was built in on purpose. Dachshunds were bred to follow badgers deep underground, and hunters needed to hear exactly where their dog was through several feet of packed soil.

So they gave them a voice you simply cannot ignore. The deep, sharp alert bark is the doorbell going off in dog form. The long, drawn out bay is her telling you she has found something and you should come at once. That low rumble in her chest is usually a running commentary, far more grumble than warning.

Once you start listening for the differences, it stops being noise and starts being conversation. 💛 The whine at the window is longing, plain and simple, and the happy little yips at dinner need no translation at all. I am always curious which sound seems to rule other households.
