Faces of Hunger International Film Festival

Faces of Hunger International Film Festival Faces of Hunger (FOH) International Film Festival is an initiative by Palms for Life Fund dedicated to increasing awareness of food security issues in the US and abroad through film.

Palms for Life Fund is a not-for-profit corporation (501(c)(3)) started by Hannah Laufer-Rottman dedicated to ending poverty by addressing its root causes. Although they’re a small fruit, kiwis contain large amounts of calcium, vitamin A and E. Some might choose not to eat kiwi because of its unappealing outer skin, but the inside is delicious and healthy, even when overripe.

More than 39 billion in-school meals have been missed globally since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic due to school closures, according to a new report released by the UNICEF Office of Research – Innocenti and the World Food Programme (WFP).

That means that 370 million children worldwide – many of whom are reliant on school meals as a key source of their daily nutrition – have missed 40 per cent of in-school meals, on average, since COVID-19 restrictions shuttered classrooms.

Children who depend on schools for their daily meals are not only losing out on an education but also on a reliable source of nutrition. As we respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and await vaccine distribution, we must prioritize the reopening of schools and take action to make them as safe as possible, including through renewed investments in proven infection prevention measures like clean water and soap in every school around the world. - UNICEF Executive Director, Henrietta Fore

The COVID-19 pandemic has set back progress towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal of Zero Hunger by 2030. Current predictions show that the world as a whole — and 47 countries in particular — will fail to achieve even low hunger within the next nine years. In addition, the climate crisis has been one factor in food insecurity, especially within already-vulnerable populations.

Do you know which is the world’s hungriest country?

a) Sierra Leone
b) Haiti
c) Somalia
d) Chad

Somalia ranks as the hungriest country in the world for 2021. Over 30 years of civil conflict has left a legacy of famine, with the last one declared in 2011.

Our Story

Faces of Hunger (FOH) is dedicated to increasing awareness of food security issues in the United States of America and abroad through film. We are looking for critical discussion and responses to the social and political structures surrounding food insecurity, quality and waste. FOH was created by Palms for Life Fund, a NYC based non-profit that works globally with organizations on-the-ground to provide access to food, water, education, and sanitation. We have set up mobile libraries for streetchildren in Ecuador, brought literacy to undermined women farmers in Burkina Faso, and built toilets in Nicaragua to improve school sanitation. With a grant from the European Union, we are now providing sustainable, quality services to the most vulnerable children in Swaziland. With regards to the United States, human rights issues aren’t confined to developing countries. In 2015, one in seven Americans experienced food insecurity; up to 40% of food produced in the United States goes uneaten every year; and because of the obesity rate, the current generation of children will be the first to live shorter lives than their parents. In one of the world’s most developed countries, such food issues should not exist. Through FOH we call upon students and filmmakers to explore solutions and shed light on this hidden reality.
