The conflict between the U.S. and Iran escalated dramatically after President Donald Trump declared the ceasefire “over,” triggering a new wave of military action on both sides.
The U.S. military said it carried out airstrikes on around 90 Iranian military targets, including air defense systems, missile and drone storage sites, naval assets, coastal surveillance facilities, and logistics infrastructure. The strikes followed Iran’s attacks on commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran retaliated by launching attacks targeting U.S. allies across the Middle East, prompting security alerts in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and later Jordan. Jordan also reported an Iranian missile attack Thursday morning.
Iranian officials reported fresh explosions across the country’s south and accused the U.S. of striking civilian infrastructure, including two railway bridges on the route to Mashhad, where the funeral of slain Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is taking place. Iranian state media also reported a strike near the Bushehr nuclear power plant. Iran’s health ministry said 14 people were killed and 78 injured during two days of U.S. attacks.
Trump defended the strikes as retaliation for Iran’s attacks on commercial vessels, warning that “If it happens again, it will get much worse!” While calling Iranian leaders “scum,” he said negotiations could still continue, but questioned whether Tehran could be trusted to honor any future agreement.
