SUN DANCE LODGE, Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation, 1907. Many of the reservation's 1,400 inhabitants had gathered for days of ritual and celebration. The Edward Curtis photo gave us a glimpse inside the lodge when few people were present. The camp was near Ashland, about 80 miles SW of Miles City, Montana. Each of the Northern Plains tribes performed a version of the Sun Dance ceremony lasting several days. Click to enlarge the view.

In 1878, Little Wolf and Dull Knife led bands of Cheyenne on a perilous trek of seven months and more than 1,000 miles from their incarceration camps in Oklahoma to their former hunting grounds where there were still buffalo. The survivors who reached southeastern Montana remained there. Prohibitions against photographing the Sun Dance came after cameras became more common. Text and digital restoration of photo by Gary Coffrin.
