Subnautica 2 is facing major backlash after developers pushed back against player complaints over the removal of the game’s “killing” mechanic 👀
In the original Subnautica, players could defend themselves against dangerous sea creatures if things got out of control. But in Subnautica 2, players recently discovered that killing mechanics appear to be removed entirely — and the reaction online has been intense.
What really sparked the controversy was a response from an Unknown Worlds developer on Discord after a fan said:
“Why can’t we kill in Subnautica 2? That makes zero sense. If not, modders will do it.”
The developer replied:
“We aren’t a killing game. Go play Sons of the Forest or something if you want to kill.”
That response quickly spread across social media, with many players accusing the studio of dismissing criticism instead of explaining the design choice respectfully.
Now, the developers have issued a follow-up statement saying they are working on improving creature behavior and adding new ways for players to “deter” hostile creatures without violence 🐠
According to the team:
“Yes, we’re working on both creature behavior in general, as well as your ability to deter them!”
While they still haven’t confirmed whether killing will ever return, it sounds like the game may introduce non-lethal defense systems instead — possibly repellents, stun mechanics, or other survival tools.
The debate has now divided fans:
Some believe Subnautica should stay focused on peaceful exploration and survival, while others argue removing self-defense takes away player freedom and realism underwater 🌊
