Disruption and Anxiety – CORE Impulse

"Updates, innovation are safe. Who was ever actually there to refuse cheaper, larger, smaller, more convenient products? We don’t fear reforming, reorganizing or re-educating ourselves for the updates on the horizon, we fear having new technology blindsiding us so completely that doing any of these things — preparing — is useless in the first place."

Flip: the future of real estate? – CORE Impulse

The way we live today has changed remarkably from the way we did fifty years ago. People are much more global and transient, constantly shifting from living in one place to another, from their roles at work, in school, or with family. The way our world has developed calls for more flexible living arrangements.

A Game Made to be Beautiful

Deaner’s journey, for lack of a better word, is unconventional. At an early age, he realized his passion for music when he saw the drummer of a band at a concert and thought to himself, “I want to be like that.” As he got older, he was able to turn his passion for music into a career: after college, Deaner toured with Kelly Clarkson’s band as a drummer, and also toured internationally with his own band, Plus/Minus. This love for music did not just stem from an appreciation of music itself, but also a desire to create, to create something original, elegant, and beautiful.

LibreTaxi: an Uber for rural, disadvantaged communities

Every day, millions of people around the world in megacities like New York, São Paulo, Kolkata, Tokyo, and Dhaka click on a bit-and-atom logo on their smartphones to hail a ride by Uber. Even citizens of smaller municipalities like Nizhny Novgorod, Russia or Milan, Italy can access Uber, or its largest competitor Lyft, at a moment’s notice. In fact, we urbanites have grown so dependent on Uber and Lyft that when these services aren’t available, chaos ensues.

Cracking the STEM Code — Interview with ScriptEd founder Maurya Couvares

As STEM-related knowledge and skills become increasingly crucial in the modern workplace, the proper training and education is necessary for students to take advantage of exciting technology career opportunities. Unfortunately, as reflected in the disappointingly homogenous demographics of most tech companies, there is unequal access to needed learning.

Following trends will not make a person stand out or make a statement with their style, but leading trends can be difficult. Lightspeed on Campus: Krish Parikh talks Strategy, AppDynamics and Tech Jobs

The state of the entrepreneurial ecosystem provides an interesting predicament for founders. Krish highlighted data that shows that 80% of angel/seed rounds are unable to raise follow-on funding. A flood of money at the beginning of the pipeline is being supplemented by unconventional investors in the later-stage as well. He went on to note that “60% of late-stage funding is coming from non-alternative sources.”

Jennifer Fried — The Founder You Always Wanted to Be

“After being a consultant at Bain for three years, certain things became very clear around what I wanted in a job and an environment . . . a lot of the companies we worked with were large, mature companies, and I wanted to be in a smaller, growth-stage environment where I could directly impact change and see the results manifest quickly.”

Of the nearly $60 billion invested by venture capital firms in 2015, less than 10% went to women entrepreneurs. This glaring disproportionality emphasizes the difficulties women face in starting their own business, and suggests that many promising ideas and ventures are being left unrealized.

A Cup of Joe with Jonathan Rubinstein, the founder of Joe Coffee

The “specialty coffee movement that was happening in Portland, San Francisco, and Chicago hadn’t come to New York at all.” Rubinstein admits that in addition to stumbling across a great brick and mortar location, he “still did my research and looked at whether or not this was something that could work in New York City. The answer was definitely yes, because for a city that has the best of everything and a great culinary scene, specialty coffee just didn’t exist.”

New Year, New Goals: Catching up with fitbod

Fitbod’s story is refreshing because of their patience, something that is rare for two young founders out of college. Rather than buy into the hype from their spike in popularity and look for ways to drive numbers through marketing or fundraising, Allen and Jesse went back to work on the product. They understood that their retained, paying users drive their product going forward.

"Understanding the pain points and needs of healthcare practitioners is difficult, unless you are one yourself. On top of that, you can experience those pains, but to understand how to build technology to solve that — technology that can scale, that is exciting, and has growth potential — is an entirely different skill set."
