BLACK THEATER ARTISTS SPOTLIGHT: I LOVE to see a Black Artist WINNING! We’re gonna have a GOOD DAY!!! Let’s take a moment to highlight a few Black Theatre Wins that I saw these past couple of weeks!

1. Titus, Joy and Jordan are going to be in the 30th Anniversary Concert of Songs for a New World in London! I might just have to go back to London in Sept. (who’s joining me?)

2. I can’t wait to see Nicholas Christopher in CHESS!

3. Drew made his Broadway Debut in Buena Vista Social Club!

4. Malick Ceesay was apart of the Iama Emerging Playwright Lab!

5. The national tour of Notebook just announced the cast!

6. Brittany and Kennedy are going to be in Decieved at The Globe! .tolson

7. Jocelyn Biohs adaption of Merry Wives is having its regional debut in DC!

8. Aisha Sougou joined the national tour cast of Hamilton!

BLACK BROADWAY HISTORY: Eclipsed made history as the first Broadway production with an all-female AND all-Black cast, director, and playwright. It premiered on Broadway in 2016 after a successful Off-Broadway run.

The Broadway production starred Lupita Nyong’o, Pascale Armand, Akosua Busia, Zainab Jah, and Saycon Sengbloh. SUCH AN INCREDIBLE GROUP OF ACTRESSES!

Shout out to all the black women who play a part and helping every show on broadway happen each night ✊🏾💐💜

OFF BROADWAY CASTING CALL: TAG or DM a friend who you think would be right for this ! An Off Broadway production of MEXODUS (a show I have been following for YEARS) is looking for an understudy. It’s a great show that you definitely wanna be a part of.

HOW IT STARTED VS HOW ITS GOING: Michelle Williams made her Broadway Debut in Aida playing the titular character. She is currently starring in Death Becomes Her on Broadway!

BLACK THEATER LEGACY: BROADWAY VETERAN Kecia Lewis made her debut at 18 years old in DREAMGIRLS! Her other Broadway credits include The Gospel at Colonus (with Morgan Freeman), Big River, Ain’t Misbehavin’ (standby for Nell Carter), Once on This Island (OBC), The Drowsy Chaperone (OBC), Chicago, Leap of Faith (OBC), Cinderella (as Marie/Fairy Godmother)and most recently Children of a Lesser God (directed by Kenny Leon).

Kecia is the EPITOME of Black Theatre Royalty! It’s important to give people heir flowers 💐 while they are still here to receive them! Thank YOU Kecia for being a guiding light for so many generations of Black Theater Kids! ✊🏾💜

BLACK THEATER HISTORY: Keke Palmer was the first Black actress to play Cinderella on Broadway! She made her Broadway debut in the role on September 9, 2014. Following her enchanted stint on Broadway, Palmer returned to her theatre roots for 2016’s Grease: Live, playing Marty in the Fox’s first musical live event. She has previously cited musical theatre as an influence on her confidence and artistry as a recording artist.

BLACK BROADWAY SHOWS IN DEVELOPMENT: Black Broadway has a lot of shows in development an Hippest Trip: The Soul Train Musical is one I have been following for YEARS. I can’t wait til they officially announce the Broadway production! How excited are you to see A Soul Train Musical? Sound off in the comments!

HOW IT STARTED VS HOW IT’S GOING: As a kid, Dulé Hill was an understudy in The Tap Dance Kid. Now, he’s starring in Lights Out: Nat “King” Cole at New York Theatre Workshop—running through Sunday, June 29!

So proud that Black Theater Tribe collaborated with them on three events during the run: a Black Creatives Networking Event, Black Theater Night, and a post-show talkback. ✨🎭

Since then he has worked on 6 Broadway Shows as an actor, writer or producer including Well, Passing Stage, The Scottsboro Boys, Chicago, Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, and Fat Ham! Colman is Black Q***r Theater ICON and paved the way for so many of us! HAPPY PRIDE ✊🏾🏳️‍🌈💜
