BLACK BROADWAY REWIND: Passing Strange premiered on Broadway in 2008 at the Belasco Theatre after being developed at Sundance Institute Theatre Lab, premiering at Berkeley Rep and then playing Off Broadway at The Public Theater!

ABOUT: A young musician rebels against his upbringing by embarking on a search for “the real.” From L.A. to Amsterdam to Berlin, he chases youthful dreams and spiritual clarity against a shifting backdrop of locales and acquaintances.

The cast included Stew, Daniel Breaker, Eisa Davis, De’Adre Aziza, Colman Domingo, Chad Goodridge & Rebecca Naomi Jones. The musical’s lyrics and book are by Stew with music and orchestrations by Heidi Rodewald and Stew. It was created in collaboration with director Annie Dorsen.

HOW IT STARTED VS HOW ITS GOING: Andre Holland played the role of Elegba in The Brothers Size at The Public Theater. 20 Years Later, he is playing the role of Ogun Size in the Off Broadway return of The Brothers Size by Tarell Alvin McCraney at The Shed.

BROADWAY DREAM CAST: Dreamgirls premiered on Broadway in 1981 with an ICONIC cast including Jennifer Holliday, Sheryl Lee Ralph ( ), Loretta Devine, and so much more! Over 40 years later, it is returning to Broadway Next Fall (fall 2026) directed and choreographed by Camille A. Brown.

I couldn’t help but imagine my own dream cast for this legendary show. This list is purely for fun; a celebration of the talent I think could bring these unforgettable characters to life in new and exciting ways.

At the same time, I’d be EVEN MORE thrilled to see the production take a bold leap and cast completely unknown performers. After all, Dreamgirls is a story about ambition, discovery, and the MAKING OF STARS. What better way to honor that legacy than to give fresh talent their big Broadway moment?

Whether it’s seasoned favorites or brand-new faces, my biggest hope is that this revival captures the magic, the music, and the drama that made Dreamgirls a classic in the first place.

BLACK & Wicked: THROWBACK to when had a full time BLACK Elphaba, Glinda AND Fiyero! Shout out to Alexia, Lucy and Ryan for playing these iconic roles! Im SOOOO GLAD I went to London and saw them; it filled my theatre kid heart with sooooo much joy 🤩

wicked broadway 1st full time Black Elphaba is Lencia Kebede in 2025 and Brittney Johnson was the 1st and only full time Black Glinda on Broadway in 2022 & Taye Diggs was the 1st Black man to play Fiyero.

Did you know Wicked in London used to have a BLACK Elphaba, Glinda AND Fiyero?

BLACK THEATER LEGACY: The LEGENDARY Lillias White made her Broadway Debut in Barnum in 1981 and been in a total of 13 Broadway Shows. Her other credits include Dreamgirls, Carrie, Once on This Island, Fela, Cats, Hadestown and more!

Lillias White is the EPITOME of Black Theatre Royalty! It’s important to give people heir flowers 💐 while they are still here to receive them! Thank YOU Lillias for being a guiding light for so many generations of Black Theater Kids! ✊🏾💜

Robinson, is having is Off Broadway Premiere starting Sept. 9th at the Audible Theater for 5 weeks only. The show is making its New York debut after three earlier stagings, at Baltimore Center Stage, Mosaic Theater Company, and Berkeley Repertory Theatre.

REST IN PEACE: Malcolm-Jamal Warner was the definition of a RENAISSANCE MAN! An actor, poet, musician, playwright, father, husband and so much more. Many of us first got to know him as Theo Huxtable on “The Cosby Show,” but he also had a significant presence in Theater.

He began his career in community theater at a young age and went on to appear in various plays. He received an NAACP Theater Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Cryin’ Shame. He wrote and performed his one-man show, Love and Other Social Issues. Malcolm also co-chaired the International Black Theatre Festival in Winston-Salem in 2003.

THANK YOU MALCOLM for giving us so much art, so much inspiration and a shining example of a Black Man. You were like our brother, our father, our cousin, our family and we will miss having you in this world. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU 🙏
