Australia is a world leader in radio astronomy.

Stars in our eyes. 🤩

Located on Gomeroi Country, outside Narrabri in north-west NSW, the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) is a set of six 22 metre diameter dishes that collect radio waves from space.

Though this stunning photo was captured here at night, radio telescopes like ATCA are observing the sky 24 hours a day, every day (even when it's cloudy).

Australia is a world leader in radio astronomy. Recently, the super-fast speeds of a neutron star’s powerful jets were recorded for the first time by ATCA and the ESA - European Space Agency’s Integral observatory.

An international team of researchers measured the jets of neutron stars to be moving at 114,000km per second – one-third the speed of light.

This Walkman-F2015 model, released in 1990, allowed to choose between cassette tapes and Radio frequencies.

As iconically 80s as workout VHS tapes, the Sony Walkman preceded the iPod by over 20 years as the first portable music player to reach cultural dominance, enabling listeners more freedom and personal choice than traditional radio broadcasting.

First released by Sony in 1979, the Walkman player became so popular that its name became synonymous with all portable audio players.

This WM-F2015 model, released in 1990, allowed listeners to choose between audio cassette tapes and AM and FM frequencies.

Tomorrow is , and is a celebration of over 100 years of radio history. Is your station celebrating?

Australia's first licensed broadcast took place on 23 November 1923, paving the way for three robust broadcasting sectors: commercial, public and, of course, community.

Our sector has changed a lot in this time, shifting from the uncertain legal and political landscape that birthed trailblazers including (but not limited to) Radio Adelaide, 2MBS Fine Music Sydney, 3MBS Melbourne 103.5FM and 4ZZZ in the 1970s to today's environment in which public support, law and political will have combined to create one of the world's most respected community broadcasting sectors.

On , we recognize radio's pivotal role in education.

📻 In over 40 countries, especially in remote regions, radio instruction is a cost-effective means of delivering education.

📻 Effective radio instruction programs tend to be highly learner-centered, interactive and local, relying on an enabling policy environment that supports sustainability, allows decentralized broadcasting and signals government commitment.

📻 Evidence shows that interactive radio-based instruction has helped reduce education gaps between rural and urban populations, girls and boys, nomadic and settled communities, and other disadvantaged children and their more privileged peers, both in terms of access to education and quality of learning.

📻 During the COVID-19 pandemic, countries like and showcased the adaptability of radio in education. By leveraging radio alongside television, they effectively reached remote learners, overcoming digital limitations.
