Gene Autry β Cowboy, Entertainer, and Proud World War II Veteran πΊπΈπ€ βοΈ**
Long before he became known as **the Singing Cowboy of Hollywood** π€π¬, **Gene Autry** answered his nationβs call during **World War II** ππͺ.
On **July 26, 1942**, during a live broadcast of his *Melody Ranch* radio show π»πΆ β and at the Pentagonβs request ποΈ β Gene was officially **inducted into the U.S. Army Air Forces** as a **Technical Sergeant** πͺ. Already a **private pilot**, he trained hard to earn his wings βοΈ, and by **June 21, 1944**, he was promoted to **Flight Officer** π.
He served with the **91st Ferrying Squadron, 555th Army Air Base Unit**, flying missions across the world π. Gene piloted **AT-6s, C-104s, and C-109s** βοΈπ¨ β even ferrying fuel in the dangerous **China-Burma-India theater** ποΈπ₯. On one mission, after a near-disastrous encounter with a **typhoon** πͺοΈ, Gene and his crew flew **five hours back to Newfoundland on a failing engine**, barely making it down safely π¬π₯. They finished the mission because thatβs what **soldiers did** πͺπΊπΈ.
When not in the cockpit, Gene continued to serve **through music** π΅β€οΈ. His radio program became the **Sergeant Gene Autry Show**, performed live for troops π€ποΈ, filled with **patriotic songs, military humor, and stories** based on real Air Force files π. Later, he led a **USO troupe** to entertain men serving in the South Pacific π΄πΆ.
For his service, Gene Autry received the **American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal,** and the **World War II Victory Medal** π
πΊπΈ. Years later, the **U.S. Air Force** wrote to him:
*"The United States Air Force is proud to have Gene Autry as a former member of this organization."* βοΈπ
Of all the honors Gene received in life πβfrom the **Hollywood Walk of Fame** (the only person with stars in **all five categories**: film, TV, music, radio, and live performance) βπ¬π€πΊπ, to his place in the **Country Music Hall of Fame** π΅ποΈβnone made him prouder than his **service to America** πΊπΈβ€οΈ.
**Flight Officer Gene Autry** passed away on **October 2, 1998**, at the age of **91** ποΈ. He rests at **Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills Cemetery** πΉ. His legacy lives on β as a **cowboy, entertainer, and above all, a patriot** π€ πΊπΈβ¨.
