"He is the Black Bob Ross."

The nickname arrived about ninety seconds into meeting and it was immediately correct. Something about talking to this man is just weirdly, wonderfully calming.

Bob Ross is beloved. So the Black Bob Ross is beloved times two. That's the math.

We really hope he's okay with the nomenclature, because it's sticking.

Also, that's two Muses in a row for us after the Melanin Muses. This has become a Muse heavy podcast and we're not mad about it.

Author, speaker, music therapist, and the voice behind Brace No More.

creates spaces where people can put words to things they haven't been able to say out loud. His work with individuals, educators, and organizations looks at how trauma and emotional endurance shape us, and how language can either support healing or get in its way.

We get into his journey, why naming your experience matters, and what it means to challenge outdated ideas about mental health. He shares from his book Cadence and Clarity, and breaks down Brace No More, the work of helping people move past simply enduring whatever life throws at them.

Also: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as a case study in handling trauma well. We're serious.

We asked Terrance Pryor the question you actually want answered: has anybody in the industry changed their behavior after he called them out, or does it just get absorbed and forgotten?

"Nah. They just ignore it."

Twenty years later he still sees the same kind of person writing rock journalism at these publications. And sure, maybe one of them hired a Black writer. But then the contributions get buried, because of the typical person they normally go to.

The Black Mirror comparison came up and it fits: the system either keeps moving without you, or it brings you in and absorbs you.

He built MP3s and NPCs because he was done waiting for door number three.

That's our last clip from this one. The full conversation is worth your hour.

Slipknot and Burger King really did a collaboration. This is not a bit.

Terrance Pryor covered it on AXS TV's Music's Greatest Mysteries, and he says it's his favorite segment he did for the show.

Naturally we had questions. What about Slipknot screams Burger King?

"Do you not remember when the mascot was the terrifying king? He was kind of scary. I could see him as the mascot for Slipknot. Just the king with that weird face. I could see some dark music being played behind that face."

Honestly? Unbeatable argument.

Ode (.e / ) and Mo "Kid" Licorish () sit down with rock journalist and MP3s and NPCs founder Terrance Pryor, and the energy shifts between big laughs and real talk almost immediately. Terrance walks through two decades in rock journalism, from hosting radio at WSOU to booking tours and eventually starting his own outlet in 2019 after years of frustration with industry access. He does not hold back about calling out Metal Sucks and Metal Injection publicly over how the metal press has treated Black writers, and the group digs into how often qualifications get overlooked in favor of Twitch streamers and comedians with large followings. Cheryl Lee Ralph's Emmys quote about building a table comes up as the perfect frame for why Terrance built MP3s and NPCs from scratch, and the group traces that same site landing distribution through Microsoft Start and Apple News.

Things stay just as lively once the conversation turns to fandom, with Terrance's Mount Rushmore of anime landing on Dragon Ball Z, Sailor Moon, Samurai Pizza Cats, and The Devil Is a Part-Timer, plus praise for the animation work in Bocchi the Rock and a Slipknot and Burger King story pulled from his time on AXS TV's Music's Greatest Mysteries. The mental health check-in gets personal, with Mo detailing a rocky adjustment to new medication and Odie sharing that she recently connected with a psychiatrist. The big mad segment brings real frustration to the surface, including Odie's breakdown of designer Telfar's controversial 9/11-themed shirt, Mo's rant about the MTA and YouTube's constantly shifting interface, and Terrance's exhaustion from PAX West travel. Everyone ends things on a high note, talking through Terrance's love of the LA improv circuit at UCB and The Pack Theater, Odie's excitement about visiting family in North Carolina, and Mo's seasonal cleaning spree ahead of Halloween.

We asked Terrance Pryor for one piece of advice for anyone trying to get into journalism, whether that's gaming, anime, rock, or anything else.

He didn't take a beat: "Start a blog. Start a blog, start a blog, start a blog."

We're losing gaming journalists and music journalists. Brooklyn Vegan and other sites have cut writers. Meanwhile everybody's pouring their work into the influencer thing on Instagram and TikTok, and as he puts it, you don't actually own that. You don't own that TikTok account. It can get deleted. It can get hacked. It can get anything.

He puts Substack in the same bucket.

"When you own your own blog, you own that."

Blogspot, Squarespace, whatever. Just start a blog. Just write.

"There's no reason to have that in private."

Ode asked Terrance Pryor why he put his name publicly on an episode called Do Metal Sucks and Metal Injection Like Black People, instead of keeping it a private vent session with friends and other music journalists.

He didn't hedge. In his words: a lot of these metal and rock publications refuse to hire Black people, it's no secret, and he has every right to call them out on it. He has dealt with these writers. He knows how they view him. And he's tired of it.

Ode, who went to school for journalism, put a period on it: you gotta stand on business, especially as a Black person in this profession.

Rock journalist. Nearly two decades in. Founder of MP3s and NPCs.

Terrance Pryor started on college radio at WSOU, moved into booking tours, then into writing, and in 2019 got tired of the access problem, so he built his own outlet instead of waiting to be let into somebody else's.

We get into what the metal press actually does to Black writers, why he put his name on it publicly instead of venting in private, and what happens when you have twenty years of experience, and the credit goes to a Twitch streamer with a follower count.

Plus Bocchi the Rock, Samurai Pizza Cats, Slipknot's very real Burger King collaboration, and the piece of advice the episode is named after.
