Today, the world lost Dolly Parton.
There will be countless tributes to the music, the rhinestones, the extraordinary career and the woman whose talent and warmth made her an icon.
At LitBuzz, we want to remember something else she gave the world:
Books. Millions and millions of books.
Dolly Parton understood that putting a book into a child’s hands could change the trajectory of a life.
Inspired by her father, who never had the opportunity to learn to read and write, she founded Dolly Parton's Imagination Library in 1995 with a simple but powerful idea: children should grow up surrounded by books, regardless of what their families could afford.
What began in the mountains of East Tennessee became a literacy movement reaching children around the wqqorld.
For those of us who believe in stories, in literacy, and in the almost magical power of the right book finding someone at the right moment, her legacy feels especially personal.
Dolly gave us songs we will sing for generations.
But she also gave generations of children their first books.
Their bedtime stories.
Their favorite characters.
Their curiosity.
And, perhaps most importantly, the chance to imagine a life bigger than the one immediately in front of them.
There are many ways to leave a mark on this world.
Helping millions of children learn to dream is a beautiful one.
Thank you for the stories, Dolly.
And thank you for making sure so many children had stories of their own.
