🚨 2020 SPJ Region 1 Conference at Hofstra University on March 20-21!
Panel Spotlight: Covering the climate crisis from A to Z
Day: Friday / Time: 4:00 – 5:15
Moderator: Scott Brinton
Speakers: Dr. Temis Taylor, Paul LaRocco, Dr. Jase Bernhardt
With human-caused carbon dioxide levels expected to rise in the coming three decades — and along with them, the Earth’s temperature — the climate crisis is among the most critical issues that journalists can — and should — be covering. Where do they begin reporting on an issue of global proportions spanning generations? How do they catch the attention of an often disinterested public? And how do they convey the severity of the crisis without unnecessarily panicking their audiences when they are willing to listen? This panel will explore these issues and more.

Panel Spotlight: Gangs - From the Hidden to the Headlines
Day: Friday / Time: 2:00 – 3:45
Moderator: Eileen Lehpamer
Speakers: Mark Morales, Errol Toulon Jr.
For decades, gangs have been living in and terrorizing some communities on Long Island. Bloods, Crips, MS-13. For years, law enforcement remained hesitant to speak about gangs to the mainstream media. And – conscious decision or not – the main stream media would sometimes not cover crimes believed committed by members of the gangs. In 2016, that all changed. Gangs went from hidden to the headlines. Where are we now? What is the current reality of gangs on Long Island and what will media coverage look like going forward? News 12 Long Island’s veteran crime reporter Eileen Lehpamer moderates a panel on gangs, law-enforcement and the media.

This year will likely see particularly nasty campaigns aimed at energizing a highly polarized electorate. Former National Journalism Ethics Committee Chair Kevin Smith and former committee member Irwin Gratz will lead a discussion of how we should help the public recognize spin, call out errors of fact, and avoid false equivalences while preserving fairness in reporting.
